The ViewLondon Review
The Blue Posts is a haven of history on famous Berwick Street.
The Venue
The Blue Posts feels like somewhere between the glamorous history of London and the brutal scarcity of a Mike Leigh film. The first thing you'll notice as you enter is the blue carpet, which covers the entire floor and remains springy and spongy underfoot. Not many pubs have the luxury of soft, dark blue shag and it reeks of the past.
Other trappings will take you back, too: the eighties cigarette machine is a blast from the past and if you could still smoke inside then you could light up on the gas fire that warmed many council houses of Thatcher's England. The sofas are green and buttoned but there's no leather here, just the burnt, torn satin of days gone by. The small pub has the aesthetics to inspire. This is England.
This Atmosphere
If you like your pubs like real pubs then you'll enjoy the Blue Posts. It's a different world to the outside, and after trudging past the names of HMV, McDonalds and Tesco Metro on neighbouring streets, it's good to see that London's heart still beats in places like this.
The talk is of football, football and other man's stuff. The wives and girlfriends that are present are few. This seems to be an escape. An escape from the shops, an escape from home, and an escape from the modernity or sad stagnancy that a lot of venues are offering. You might say it's very working men's club: both friendly and honest.
The Drink
In true working men's club ethos The Blue Posts is heavy on the lager and ale. On tap there is Adnams Directors Bitter for the ales and Carlsberg, Fosters, Kronenbourg and Strongbow for lager. Like the poster says, "Good Taste Guinness" is served at the Blue Posts. Beyond this there really isn’t much to mention and nobody seems to mind.
The Last Word
The Blue Posts has all the charm to match anything that the 21st century can throw at it, and there’s a near perfect Guinness to boot.
