I have just returned home from the Bolingbroke, having met friends there for brunch. My experience was so positive, I feel massively inclined to write a review - something I have never done after visiting a restaurant!
As parents to a 6 month old, we could not have been made to feel more welcome. As we arrived with the pram, a highchair was whisked to our table, and there were no looks when our little darling decided she wanted to practice her new found art of high pitched screeching, or smearing her pureed food everywhere...
But the icing on the cake was when brunch arrived and the waitress offered to hold her for 10 minutes whilst we ate - absolutely amazing!! You become so used to apologising to people for your offspring and either eating cold food, or having to wolf if back so quick, that you have indigestion for the rest of the day - this has literally made my day!
Living in 'nappy valley', there are a plethora of baby/kid friendly and we go to all of them, regularly - but the Bolingbroke will most certainly be getting the lions share of our business from now!
In one word disappointing.
The food I tried in two occasion was really average but worst of all was the service.
The manageress was very rude to me and my family when we complained about the food. She told us how the chef is her boyfriend and that she knows how good he is at his job.We were told that if we didn't like the food the best option we had was to not come back. She then walked away and told one of the waitress we were a bunch of "a...holes"..
We will obviously never go back.
This is a great pub & I'll go at least once a week. The service is brilliant & they really look after locals. The menu changes every season so you never get bored. Make sure you book if you want to eat on the weekends though, it gets very busy!
The sister pubs The Abbeville, The Stonhouse and Avalon all share a warm atmosphere and are pleasant places for a drink. Unfortunately they also share food that is overpriced and average quality with little in the way of vegetarian options. Whilst the other pubs are on the whole well run, I found the staff at this pub in particular to be rude & inefficient. There are plenty of better places to eat or drink nearby and I suggest you choose one of them instead!
Don't understand the negative comments, have been to this place quite a few times and really like it - I guess some people will always find stuff to complain about.
Food and service have both been great every time we've been and its always busy so I guess I'm not alone in liking it!
Good service and tasty food
I'm not sure what the other reviews are talking about, but I ate here on Valentine's Day with my husband and it was amazing. We had crab cakes and scallops to start which were perfect, and then the chateaubriand to share as a main, which was cooked perfectly (the chips that went with it were particually good as well). For desert we had an amazing gooey chocolate fondant and a cheesecake. The staff were lovely and attentive, recommended wine/desserts and always making sure that our water/wine was filled up. All in all, it was a great experience and we will be going back soon
I think management here needs seriously looking at - staff are very unprofessional and stand offish, music is deafening and there are always a couple of grubby looking cooks having a fag outside the kitchen which is unpleasant to say the least.
Give it a very wide berth - there are many nicer places nearby.
