The ViewLondon Review
In the heart of ever trendy, so-cool-it-hurts Dalston, the Brewery Tap shows that even places with such plaudits have dirty little secrets.
The Venue
Located near Dalston Junction, the Brewery Tap is easily recognisable by its claret facade and big, tacky gold lettering. Inside, though, the grimy grind of the busy road is forgotten and a sea of beige greets you. Unfortunately, the illusion is short lived and despite the tidy interior the grotty facade reflects well on the pub.
Cheap velvet booths make up some of the seating but you might feel uncomfortable once you’ve sat on the springs that spike upwards. There is other seating available, fruit machines and flat screen TVs for entertainment.
The Atmosphere
Bruiser types sit at tables like lone wolves, sipping beer and making little conversation. You don’t have to look tough as nails in here but the dandier dresser would instantly stand out. On the whole, it appeals to local types who are looking for cold beers and continuity in their socialising. The bar staff are friendly enough and inform you about upcoming live music. There may not be much here but anywhere with Sky Sports and the gift of football has a chance of stirring up an atmosphere.
The Drink
Wine isn’t on the menu at the Brewery Tap. That’s not to say it’s not served, it quite literally isn’t on the menu. There is a small range of beers including Fosters and Kronenbourg - hardly enough for a connoisseur. Without much else of note going on behind the bar the eyes are drawn to the sight of Magners on tap, pleasing to most. There is also John Smiths bitter to complete the total lack of inspiration.
The Last Word
The Brewery Tap could only appeal to its own regulars. It has no emphasis on anything other than serving drinks in a distinctly average public house.
