The ViewLondon Review
Located opposite Leicester Square Tube station, The Brewmaster is an adequate place for a quick drink.
The Venue
With its traditional – if dull - decor, a large bar area, a couple of gambling machines and plenty of seating for a more cosy chat, The Brewmaster is no different to hundreds of pubs that you may find in central London. There’s an upstairs room accessible via a creaky staircase (that seems more geared up for dining) and there’s even a little partially covered yard area to the rear for smokers.
The Atmosphere
Popular with shoppers, local workers, tourists and theatregoers, the clientele is pretty eclectic and has no particular feel other than it’s a transient mix. Whoever you are you will receive a warm welcome from the friendly staff. Peak times are after work and at weekends.
The Food
Pretty standard pub grub is on offer. This may include: a homemade fish finger sandwich; chicken, chorizo and red pepper salad (£4.95); and a rustic deli board (£8.95) which includes a selection of ham, chicken, seasonal leaves, cheese and pickles. Sunday roast is also available priced £7.95.
The Drink
There’s a choice of 10 draft lagers, beers and ciders, including Stella, Greene King and Old Speckled Hen. The average price of a pint is £3.80. Peroni, Corona and Brooklyn lager are some of the bottled choices which also average £3.80. There are also several award winning wines on offer. The Australian shiraz £4.75 per glass/£19.45 a bottle provides plenty of bang for your buck. Additionally, prosecco is £19.95 a bottle, with the house champagne priced £26.95. A bottle of Bollinger will set you back £49.95 but cracking that open in these surroundings may be a little deflating.
The Last Word
Given its location in the heart of tourist-land, The Brewmaster could easily fall into the trap of being a rip-off and the purveyor of shoddy service. Thankfully, the service is usually pretty good and the drinks aren’t extortionate. Not bad if you need a handy meeting place by Leicester Square Tube.
