It's overpriced and underused but their daily promotions - and the large beer garden which gets the afternoon sun - are what keep me coming back. Mondays are 2-for-1 chefs specials; I've had a decent rib-eye steak with chips for £8 which is superb value; not sure I would pay £16 for it though. On Tuesday they serve 2-for-1 sandwiches; I went yesterday and had an amazingly succulent and tasty pulled pork roll with parsnip chips. For £4.25 it was unbeatable but again, I'm not sure I'd pay £8.50 for a sandwich. Wednesday is 2-for-1 burgers and these beauties are delightful. I might even be tempted to stump up the £10 for a full-price one.
Unfortunately the beer is expensive - pushing £4 a pint even for the ales - and the staff don't know how to keep them, as I've had flat pints of Fosters before and rancid ales.
The pub is very large which may give the impression that it is emptier than it is but one can't help feeling that if they knocked 50p off the price of a pint it would be far, far busier. The food is great, as is the location and the garden, but pubs are for drinking and that's what lets the Britannia down.
Wanted to like this place, particularly as it took me so long to get there (don't get me started on TFL). Wasn't expected the best service, as I already heard it was pretty bad, but wasn't expecting the level of rudeness and petulance from the staff. Don't bother, so many better places near by.
We ordered roast dinner and waited over 1hr while people who arrived later already tucked into theirs. When we asked how long it would take we just got a ' it ll come when it ll come luv' response! It s a great venue with a lovely garden, but the bar staff and landlady/manager have a bad attitude. After 1.5hrs we decided to get a refund, without getting even the slightest hint of an apology. Really not the complaining type, but if you are made to wait forever at the very least you d expect an explanation. The pub sits perfectly, right on the edge of Victoria park but there are 3 other great choices in the area, so will give this one a miss in the future.
After a dreadful experience here about a year ago, being a local i thought I'd give it another go... wow has it changed! new menu, new prices, new beers (not so great), new ales(great) and new chef. had the roast beef on Sunday and i can most definitely say this shabby boozer is on its way up again... food was quick and AMAZING!... for sure worth the 14.50 we each paid... still have to say they need more staff to cope with the bar but since last visit it's become more relaxed and the bar staff are friendlier than ever!! will be back for sure!
If you're looking for appalling food at ridiculous prices then give this place a go. We bought a lukewarm bowl of potato scratchings for £3.50, and two pints of amstell that was well past its sell by date for £3.75 each. The food, drink, atmosphere and service were so bad that I felt personally wronged and completely ripped off. There are expensive pubs round the corner that are actually decent. Probably best avoided-our impression if the place was terrible. Never coming back.
The food in this pub is truly terrible and completely over-priced. I ordered a burger that was, according to the menu, supposed to be filled with lettuce and tomato and accompanied with onion rings. When my burger arrived it had neither the onion rings nor the salad and had been over-cooked even though I had asked for it to be served rare. I was told the 'onion rings' mentioned on the menu actually referred to slices of red onion. But I didn't even have red onion on my plate! I sent it back and had to wait ages before they brought out the same burger with a pathetic slice of tomato and onion in it, by which time it was cold. I sent it back again and asked that they please cook me another burger - I actually received the same burger reheated, now as tough as leather. All this for £11.00! My friend's veggie burger amounted to 3 sloppy mushrooms shoved into a cold white bun and he said it was tasteless. He was also still hungry after eating it due to the meagre filling. Despite making a polite complaint and explaining how awful the burger was, all I was offered was a free soft drink! Some of the staff were friendly and the outside area is nice but this place is one to avoid if you want good food at honest prices.
Ordered beef for 4- cost £50, what came out was a medium sized chopping board with the scrag end of a piece of beef on it and vegetables for garnish, so we each had a small spoonful of cabbage, a couple of pieces of carrot, a couple of roast potatoes and a half a slice of beef each- as far as pub roasts go it was the most miserable i've seen. The food we did have was very tasty though. So we asked our waiter for more veg (offering to pay for it) and he said he'd bring it along. We waited and ate what we had, and finally the manager came past to ask if everything was alright and we explained we still hadn't got the extra veg, and now didn't need it. Instead of apologising she glared murderously at the waiter and pulled him to one side to give him a very obvious telling off- embarrassing for us, unnecessary because it was too late and completely unprofessional on her part. She then said she would generously not charge us for the extra veg we had ordered that we didn't have (!) and would give us 10% off the beef platter. After endlessly ordering drinks that didn't come or came after reminders we finally asked for our bill (which came very promptly) and noticed not only had they included the phantom veg, but had also charged us a 12.5% service fee! Hate that at pubs anyway, but was outraged after the service we'd had. Would like to say it was a one off but went in the summer for a couple of drinks and customer service was terrible- bar staff had no idea who was next and were getting cranky when the customers tried to tell them. View London- please reassess these jokers!
This place is getting worse! As a large group of 10 for lunch yesterday the service was poor to the point of comedy. Although there was table service for drinks staff would take one drinks order and then leave, ignoring the 9 other people at the table who were also wanting to order drinks. Totally different beers arrived than what we ordered, some drinks never arrived at all. When we ordered our mains, they missed one of our party and the waiter had to be flagged down and brought back. The food was good but the roast chicken was half a bird - far more than most of us could manage - while the roast beef and vegetarian options were so small that those of us who ordered them were still hungry. We had no fewer than 4 different servers and they clearly weren't talking to each other. We were brought dessert menus but waited a good 45 minutes before anyone bothered to come back for our dessert orders.
I would go here for a quick drink from the bar but never again for food - and I would never expect even competent service.
Living near this pub we have tried it a few times as it has a nice looking garden for the kids to run around in while you eat - unfortunately each time I have visited it the service has become progressively worse. After today's visit I won't be returning. Woeful service, rude staff - there are many pubs in the area who provide a better servie. A great venue spoiled by the management - what a shame.
Totally gone off this pub which is a shame as have eaten here on at least 3 occasions.Having ordered food it was dispatched from the kitchen and the manager came over to us saying "you could have stopped me as I went past". Now forgive me but I had a blackboard number the size of a small fridge on my table and had I said "Is that my food"? no doubt I would have been a pushy customer! Now is it my business to look out for my overpriced food once I order it!? I was trying to enjoy the company I was with. As you can see I was rather upset by the way I was spoken to and rather shocked at the attitude towards customers. Also please clean the garden! It was strewn with fag ends dirty straws and other rubbish so we had to sit inside as it was inappropriate for young children. Bar staff have always been really nice though!
Nice place and service. The food is excellent, however quite expensive for a pub and for the location. Also I was wondering if they ever clean the tables.Sorry guys!!! I would recommend however to all!
Great local boozer and the all new food menu. Bring on the traditional Sunday Roasts!
