The ViewLondon Review
The Broadgate Exchange is a relaxing, old fashioned pub set in the modern world of the City. A great contrast right? Not necessarily. The VenueThe Broadgate Exchange looks like a typical British pub from the outside, and as you step in it pretty much is, but with little of the warmth and charm you’d expect. Everything seems too worn and faded to show its true colours, including the dreary upholstery, the old paint on the walls, and the battered carpets. This creates a dim, dated vibe with no unique character to give it a lift. However, there are plenty of niches to get comfortable in with a quiet drink if you want some privacy. And there’s a large TV which could help liven up the pub with some matches.
The AtmosphereAn air of dullness settles over The Broadgate Exchange even when full, as the workers from the nearby banks come here for a very, very laid back drink - so much so that their ambience lacks in liveliness and banter as everyone seems to tired. The darkness of the venue doesn’t help, making you feel lazy and bored. The place still manages to feel casual even though lots of City suits are here, but it also attracts the more laid back customer, too.
The DrinkUnfortunately, the drinks list does not save The Broadgate Exchange. Cheap bottles of wine aren’t a bad bet, with bottles for £16 maximum, but the small selection, mostly consisting of new world wines, may bother some. A decent row of beers on tap allows lager lovers to take their pick, but its nothing out of the ordinary and there’s not much else is available. Ordinary pub food is also served, with the emphasis on filling, traditional British food keep satisfy rather than excite.
The Last WordThis pub has potential to be good, it just needs a serious makeover to reinstall some classic pub charisma.
