The ViewLondon Review
Something’s happening on Fulham Broadway. The trashy TGI Fridays and boozy Slug and Lettuce are gone - in their place an upmarket gourmet supermarket and now, the chic and impressive Broadway Bar and Grill. With style, sports and a solid commitment to excellent food, it’s set to become a south west destination.
The Venue
The grand, lofty building that is now home to the Broadway Bar and Grill sits on Fulham Broadway, seconds from the tube station. It’s a prime position for this new brasserie-style sports bar and eatery that brings buckets of class to an area dominated by tacky boozers. Inside, the exposed brickwork and piping, olive-coloured leather banquettes and trendy tiling combine to create a stylish loft-apartment feel, illuminated with natural light from large windows by day, before a seductive artificial glow takes over at night.
The ground floor offers relaxed pub-style dining, pints and great cocktails, while upstairs you will find the upmarket restaurant and grill Brasa (a Spanish word meaning red-hot coals), specialising in smoky, chargrilled meats, fish and veg in a more refined setting.
The Atmosphere
Although there are multiple flatscreeens playing sport – a nod to its previous existence as the World Cup pop-up bar Fever Pitch - the venue is so spacious that it’s perfectly possible to enjoy a meal while barely noticing there is a big match on. With years of experience setting up successful bars in the West End, the owners have succeeded in creating a funky bar with a Soho feel that has the relaxed ambience and friendly atmosphere of a south west pub. Expect a buzzy atmosphere and chilled-out crowd, on any night of the week.
The Food
The hero of the Grill is, well, the grill. Specially imported from Spain to take centre stage in the Brasa kitchen, it churns out the finest in artfully grilled meat and produce in the upstairs dining rooms. You don’t miss out if you sample the menu downstairs though, where top-notch brasserie meals are on offer. Although a bit pricier than you’ll find in other Fulham haunts, the quality is worth it.
Linguini with sun-dried tomatoes, rocket, olives and chilli is rich and robust with chunky, juicy tomato sauce draped seductively over the al dente pasta – a hearty veggie option at £8.95. The humble cheeseburger is sensational – a silky meat patty is served with cheddar and bacon in a chargrilled bun (£8.95), with a side of perfectly cooked herby fries. There's also ribeye steaks, Cumberland sausages, salads and small plates like the Louisiana buffalo wings (£4.75) – a great accompaniment for the footy.
The Drink
Although there are stupendous wines to match your grilled meats (including a juicy, medium-bodied and flavourful carmenere (£5.25/£21), don’t miss the cocktails here. Choose from the extensive list or tailor your own – the Broadway Julep (London beefeater, damson gin and quince liqueur with sugar syrup and a touch of mint - £7.50) is deliciously drinkable with just the right amount of sweetness. If you enjoy your fizz, the Lemon Semi Freddo (£8.50) with lemon-infused vodka and limoncello, lemon sorbet and prosecco is light, refreshing and tantalisingly tangy.
It is a pseudo sports bar after all, so there are plenty of beers and ales (bottled and draught) with pints from £3.60 and bottles from £3.80. The extensive wine list has lots of Spanish, Chilean and Argentinian options and drops start from £3.50 a glass. Although you could end up spending quite a bit if you order at the higher end of the menu, generally prices here are good value.
The Last Word
Refreshingly different with lots of style and substance, the Broadway Bar and Grill is a worthy addition to your London must-do list. And if you’re passing through Fulham Broadway tube station, your immediate options just got a whole lot better.
