The ViewLondon Review
Situated close to a number of very traditional pubs, The Bull brings a different flavour to Highgate. It has a extensive, specialist beer selection for all taste buds, ranging from their own brewed ales to exclusive craft beers from the four corners of the world. And it also offers an exciting menu with a distinctly American/Mexican feel that will leave you wanting more.
The Venue
After a string of failed restaurants at this address, this Grade II listed building located on one of Highgate’s main roads was resurrected by owner Dan Fox and turned into a light and spacious locals’ pub. Fox is formerly of The White Horse in Parsons Green, a beer-focused pub that’s widely considered one of the capital’s best. This new venture has reclaimed wooden tables adorned with candles, classic Motown songs coming out of the speakers, and a large open fire that sits in a corner for those cold winter nights. The Bull also has a large front patio with tables perfect for the summer and an upstairs room with its own bar allowing further space for diners and drinkers alike.
The Atmosphere
Having only been open for a month, The Bull is still finding its identity when it comes to atmosphere but it obviously has huge potential. It already attracts a very wide ranging clientele, from young trendy professionals from nearby Crouch End to the older folks. It certainly has the feel of a locals’ pub. The staff, like The Bull’s food and beer selection, has a clear American influence – expect smiles all around, attention to detail and general friendliness.
The Food
For those looking for a burger or fish and chips, this is not the place for you. The Bull’s Californian chef has had a stint at the excellent Galvin La Chapelle in Spitalfields, and has used his experience and background to create The Bull’s tremendous menu. While not cheap – mains range from £9.50 to £15.50 – The Bull’s dishes are creative and flavoursome and worth every penny. Fish tacos (£5.50), pineapple and jalapeno pulled pork (£12.75) and grilled salmon with succotash – an American bean and corn dish – (£12.50) put this pub’s menu in a different league to your usual local boozer.
The Drink
The Bull’s biggest selling point is certainly its beer selection, but the pub also offers a decent wine list. Ales in particular are very reasonably priced – The Bull’s own brew Nervous Energy comes at around £3 a pint – but for those prepared to fork out for something special, they also have exclusive beers such as Moor Fusion for £23 and the interestingly named Lost Abbey Judgment Day for £24. The American feel can be found in their beer selection, too, with a large number of craft beers coming from the US of A. There are five options on tap, around ten on keg and dozens in bottles.
The Last Word
While The Bull is still finding its feet in terms of atmosphere, it more than compensates with its extensive beer selection, fantastic menu and friendly staff. It’s a welcome addition to the Highgate pub scene, one that promises to become a hit with locals and those on the capital's beer trail.
