The ViewLondon Review
The Bunch of Grapes has the traditional inners of an old drawing room and the perfect alleyway to enjoy al fresco drinks in the summer sun.
The Venue
Located on the edge of Lime Street, unfortunately smothered by the non-stop building work of the area, sits the diminutive form of the Bunch of Grapes. The alleyway that neighbours the pub is a partially covered haven for smokers and upright, sunbathing drinkers.
The interior is small and uses high stools pushed against ledges to maximise the space that’s there. Whilst stools aren’t the most comfortable things to rest on with problems arising from angles at which to sit. invariably ending in ‘the slouch’, these stools have back rests - a subtlety that increases comfort by untold amounts. The wooden panels that cover the walls can’t help but turn the place into some kind of strange headmaster’s study with a large bar slammed down into it. The slightly swirled glass of the windows allows a good amount of natural light and warmth into the room and the beams that beat through play on the dust that hangs in the air.
The Atmosphere
The Bunch of Grapes has a quirky appeal and whilst it may envy the red and gold facades of its neighbours, it attracts an individual crowd. You’ll find bankers crammed into all of the pubs in this area because it's predominantly the type of work that’s on offer here, but the Bunch of Grapes has a social atmosphere and none of the ostentation of others.
There seems to be a local set that hangs out on the corner of the bar; all men with grey to white hair, laughing with a pint of ale in hand. Workmen also join other less formal City types for lunchtime, afternoon and evening drinks.
The Food
The restaurant is located above the bar and offers a classic pub menu. Baked potatoes are served with salad and come with cheese, beans or tuna. If you’re looking for carb overload then the shepherds pie and wedges will fuel you for days plus there is a range of burgers and other hearty dishes.
The Drink
There isn’t the greatest selection of alcoholic drinks on offer at the Bunch of Grapes. Fosters, Stella and Carling make up a fairly dull bunch with a little more excitement among the bottled beers in the fridge. There’s Budweiser and the summer favourite, Magners cider.
The Last Word
The Bunch of Grapes is a City pub with a difference. It’s a relaxed and welcoming sanctuary in which to congregate if you work or happen to pass through the area.
