The ViewLondon Review
Nestled opposite Chelsea's ground, The Butchers Hook pub was the setting for the deal that gave birth to the South London club more than a hundred years ago. These days, you're more likely to find discerning diners enjoying the market-fresh menu in this remodeled, upmarket gastropub. The VenueThe pub and restaurant is big and airy, with lots of big wood tables and pick-and-mix chairs. There's a island area which is perfect for perching for a chat and some nibbles, and there's space outside for sunny days and smokers.
The AtmosphereThe Butchers Hook is relaxed and friendly. Clientele ranges from families, to suited and booted businessmen having post-work drinks, to footie fans stumbling out of a match and looking for something a bit more than a burger and a beer. Staff are accommodating and happy to advise on the best choice of dishes if you've got trouble choosing, and to maintain a good relationship with the Chelsea fans, a BBQ will usually fire up on match days.
The FoodThe menu changes daily depending on what's fresh and what's in season. A starter of moules mariniere swims in a tasty, oniony broth with big plump mussels (the chef is French so this comes highly recommended!), and deep fried courgette flower stuffed with ricotta is crisp and soft, and not at all greasy.
Main courses are a good mixture of vegetarian, fish and meat. Fillets of John Dory are accompanied by an oozy dill risotto and a pile of fresh rocket, whilst a cote de bouef is huge, but melts in the mouth and is perfectly cooked. A Neal's Yard cheese board comes with a sweet and tangy fig and apple chutney, and chocolate pudding boasts everything you could want in a dessert - creamy vanilla ice cream, hot cakey pud and gooey chocolate ganache in the middle. Heaven.
The DrinkAs a fully functioning pub, the drinks list is extensive. Wine comes by the glass, jug or bottle, and the menu makes some suggestions as to which wines match best with various dishes, including desserts.
The Last WordFresh food, innovative dishes and a friendly atmosphere make this Fulham eaterie a winner.
