The ViewLondon Review

Review byJennifer Rigby11/10/2007
The Camden Arms is often inexplicably empty, perhaps because of its slightly lost location amidst the townhouses of Camden. Come on people – it’s a great place and it has one of the cutest beer gardens in London.

The Venue
The wallpaper’s so nice at The Camden Arms that you want it in your house, and they’ve not skimped on the other stuff - like the interesting wall decorations (no Ikea here, thank you very much), and an eccentric gold twisty staircase in one corner. The beer garden’s great too, with a mirrored fountain, overlooked by the railway so you can live out your Railway Children fantasies. There are even interesting quotes carved into the tables.

The Atmosphere
There are tables out the front of The Camden Arms as well as in the back garden, which usually have a few punters, but the quietness inside means that the atmosphere is not one for a massive knees-up but rather a gentle drink with mates. It’s not raucous, but friendly bar staff and a nice crowd make up for that.

The Food
The food is OK but not spectacular at The Camden Arms – the outdoor BBQ that sporadically makes an appearance is a bit more exciting. It’s good value as you get two sides free with whatever main meaty choice you make, and the nachos are brilliant - a huge plate for less than the price of a pint. Inexplicably, they stop serving early.

The Drink
The Camden Arms has a wide range of all sorts of booze, and the bar staff are happy to help you choose if the range is too bewildering. Interesting beers and a vast cocktail list - comprising 40 cocktails and shooters – will keep you busy trying different tipples all night.

The Last Word
A ‘low-slung slinky gastro regal affair’ is what the pub calls itself. It’s also apparently the site of the last fatal duel ever fought in England. That speaks for itself – who could resist a slice of old school romance over their nightcap?
