The ViewLondon Review
The Camden Head looks and feels like a big time brewery owned boozer but it does have enough charm to attract the haters.
The Venue
Located in the lower end of downtown Angel, the Camden Head keeps itself relatively clandestine in the depths of Camden Passage, camouflaged by the look-a-like imitations that cover the area. In fact, the Camden Head is one of the better versions of these classic pubs with contemporary appeal.
Once you’re within the speckled granite walls the pub becomes a fairly attractive proposition. The huge circular bar resides in the middle of the floor and apart from the occasional bar stool propped against it, the majority of the seating migrates to the edges of the room where private booths and benches are created by old fashioned partitions of polished wood and frosted glass. It is outside, though, where the Camden Head really makes it mark come the summer. It has a small but delicate patio with benches surrounded by plants that inspire the crowds.
The Atmosphere
The Camden Head attracts a range of patrons who stumble in looking for the generic public house that the facade has promised them. The bar is busy in the evenings and there is a good hub of noise both inside and out. Being tucked away from the main glare of Upper Street, the pub still manages to maintain a popularity that even the better-located bars might want to achieve. The many staff on patrol are quick to help and queues are a rarity.
The Food
Typical, average and ordinary are the only words you could use to describe the food here, so that already puts it on a par with the rest of its peers who continue to dish out the same fish and chips, sausage and mash, burgers, jackets and sandwiches. It’s there to fill a hole and that it does capably well.
The Drink
There is a display of big branded spirits and a commercial wine list to satisfy all at the Camden Head. On tap there is Staropramen, Fosters, Stella, Leffe, Kronenbourg and Old Speckled Hen.
The Last Word
The Camden Head is your average old boozer that pulls a good pint with the added bonus of a garden patio.
