Very cosy pub in winter, lovely bistro-esque lighting, my favourite new Sunday spot. Great wines by the carafe, newspapers and a great atmosphere (good play list last Sunday too).
Went to the Camel for the first time last Sunday and I loved it. Pie and mash was excellent and the drink selection was great. Staff were v friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
Was really excited about visiting this pub for the drink selection and I guess that was the one thing that didn't let down - they have interesting ales and ciders.
However, the guy behind the bar was so rude and unhelpful. He walked off twice in the middle of serving us and couldn't answer any questions about the origin of the meat in their "homemade pies" which are not made on the premises. I'd doubt they're made in anybody's home either for that matter.
The food was the real issue - £9 for what tasted like a ready meal. The mash was lumpy and gluey at the same time, the gravy was obviously Bisto with a bit of redcurrant jelly stirred in and the pie's pastry was ridiculously hard from being re-heated badly. There was barely any filling in the thing - Pieminster's aren't that great but they are miles better than these. Boo.
The Camel is amazing. I drink there frequently...my second home in fact! It is intimate and cosy, with great décor and music.
And I have never had a problem with staff or punters. If perhaps you have had a problem with either the staff or people there, it may be that in deed you are a twat and they simply don't like you?
It is possible.
I live just accross the road from this pub (i.e. within hearing range) and my partner and I drink here all the time. I have never seen/ heard any of the problems other users have commented on! I know the landlord personally and a random calling him a "loser" is really uncalled for. This is a lovely pub with a great atmosphere. The only time I've seen it uncontrollably busy is when Victoria Park have events on and the staff work extremely hard to cope. I would highly recommend people visit for themselves, you won't be disappointed!
I love this place, a hidden gem in the East. Very friendly and laid back vibe, cool staff and the pies are something else. Will definitely become a repeat offender... CAMEL!
This is the WORST resteraunt i have ever been to in my whole life. The manager is a complete ****. Thinks he is funny but is a complete loser. The food is pants.
Went in there on a sunny Sunday, was really busy, the owner let us take a table and chairs ouside so we could sit in the alley. really friendly. We didn't eat but plenty people were. Good wine lists. Will be going back soon. X
This is my local pub, I drink in the Camel twice a week. The pub is the friendliest places I know in London. The bar staff are very sweet, the pies ecellent, the music cool and laid back. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST PUBS IN LONDON. In reponse to the reviews below. I have never ever seen any troble with customers or barstaff. It sounds like the reviews below are talking about a different pub. Go and see for yourselves.
Fantastic, local pub. Very relaxed. Nice tunes. Didn't try the food but it looked good. Bar staff were really nice (even let me charge up my phone). We stayed all day. Wish more pubs were like this.
Worst pub I've been to in a long, long while. Strangely rude and passively agressive bar staff, semi-cold food and lots of very, very drunk people about that seemed to be looking for a fight! Scary!
Don't go to The Camel unless you want to be slap bang in the middle of a brawl. I went there for the first time on Sat night and won't be going back.
Even more shocking was that it was the Landlord who was doing the brawling with his mates and staff all jumping on the bandwagon.
I couldn't wait to get out of that pub and won't be going back, it gives East London the bad reputation it has been trying to leave behind.
We didn't enjoy our time at The Camel. Although the pub is smoke-free indoors, when we were there the doors and windows of the pub were kept open and the smoke from smokers congregating immediately outside the doors flowed freely inside. To make matters worse, The Camel has two doors on either end of the pub and when both are kept open, it can create a little wind tunnel that sucks smoke in one door, down the length of the pub, and out the second door. The evening we were there, it was as if a smoker was sitting right next to us.
Really enjoyed our evening at The Camel. The food was good and the service could not be faulted. My husband had the proper old style pie and mash, and claimed it was better than his mother's! I hope she doesn't read this or he'll be in trouble. The Camel is a real gem.
