I am writing this as I am angered and disgusted with the manger / owner response to a resent compliant I made on behalf of 35 family and friend that had a terrible experience in the Canbury Arms on Sat 17th dec 11. This followed up for a complaint made by my parents the next day, in person.
I received a telephone call from the manager / owner on Tue 20th Dec , thinking that he would apologise but he accused the people who wrote reviews of making a public smear campaign against the Pub and asks ME to apologise to him. I'm sorry but people are entitled to make their opinions heard. This is a person who obviously thinks we are a second class citizens than him and obviously he can't handle criticism. I want to know if he treats all customers like this? You can see that that his attitude rubs off on his staff, manger are supposed to lead by example.
The manger was not in attendance on the evening so he has no idea how horrific the food and service was. He should be thankful that we are highlighting the issues with the pub. There was another Christmas party around 20+ people who also complained about the meal. People were paying between £22.50 or £27.50 for 2 /3 courses ( Excluding alcohol), this was an absolute rip-off. The quality of food and service was so poor, that its robbery they charge that. The amount we paid per head you would have thought that we might have received a complementary glass of wine or a minced pie!!
The staff were un-attentive and unhelpful, a request for the heaters to be turned on was met with a “I’m sorry they are not working and there’s nothing I can do about it”, we were sitting in the conservatory in December. There were Two waitresses serving 50+ people as we had to share with another Christmas party. When I arrived early the tables and chairs not setup on arrival and had to ask the waitress to setup the tables. They even had to take a number of chairs from our table to use for the other Christmas party obviously very good p
This hidden gem is tucked away in the back streets of Kingston, it feels like you discovered something really special when you enter this pub. There is a warm friendly, buzzing atmosphere which is infectious!
Once you've sampled the food here you will be reluctant to go anywhere else in the area. The quality of the dishes, whether it's a light bite, for example Wild Boar Sausage Rolls 4.85, a starter of Beetroot Cured Salmon, Beetroot & Horseradish Relish with Homemade Soda Bread 6.50, or a delicious Canbury Burger 10.80 (not to mention the exquisite desserts, Sticky Toffee Pudding with Ice Cream and Toffee Sauce) is stunning, as good if not better than many top West End eateries.
The wines and beers are superb with really well kept real ales. To compliment the food and drink the service is second to none, from polite, friendly and welcoming staff.
The Canbury has regular offers, which make the appeal of this great pub even more tempting! Don't resist the temptation, take a visit and see for yourself.
We have been going to the Canbury since it re-opened in 2005.
We've been going less frequently recently; more competition has appeared (The Albert on Kingston Hill, the Pottery on Park Road, the Norbiton Dragon etc.) and the menu has become a bit stale.
We did go for Sunday lunch (11/01/2009). Much quieter than normal and I can now esee why.
I was suspicious when I got the "you can have your table from 2 'til 4" script when I reserved a table - it's a pub in Kingston for goodness sake!
What did mark the Canbury out previoulsy was that it was super-friendly and, particularly, family friendly; this visit I was told to keep my children in their seat.
If you've been to the Canbury before be warned; it's not what it used to be. Particularly if you have young childdren just don't go there!
Popped in here for a drink and a bite to eat with friends last Saturday. It was buzzing...busy, but in a good way...you could still hear yourself think. Looks like a traditional pub from the outside, but is more like a bar and restaurant inside. Great selection of beers and wine and the bar snacks were reasonably priced and delicious...didn't eat from the main menu, but it looked amazing. Friendly staff...a classy joint...with a mixed age clientele...Would recommend, especially for pre-cinema or theatre drinks and food. A real find...
The Canbury Arms is a friendly place for all the family. No smoking with a good wine selection.
The Canbury Arms, just 5 minutes from Kinston Station, has a quiet paved patio out back, a good wine selection and the promise of good food shortly. It's a really friendly place that caters for all the family. Light and airy inside. No smoking.
