The ViewLondon Review
Venture fifteen minutes from the hub of Golders Green, up the Finchley Road, and on the left of the junction stands the imposing building that is The Castle. Old-fashioned and unabashedly so, this place is a throwback to an era when entertainment was loud, brash and brassy.
The Venue
The thing that first strikes you about The Castle is the level of spaciousness. It’s refreshing to find a pub that serves food, where tables and chairs aren’t just crammed to the detriment of easy mobility. There are lots of fun elements to the decor and posters of Che Guevara and other iconic figures may make you think you’ve taken a wrong turn and ended up in Camden. There are many live bands, even Elvis impersonators, who rock this place on a weekend – and the crowd love it. There is a Phoenix Nights element to proceedings but the enthusiasm for fun shared by the party-goers shines through.
The Atmosphere
Before you enter there is a sign that reads ‘T-shirts must be worn at all times’. This does not bode well but don’t take it as a sign of any unnecessary attitude as this couldn’t be further from the reality. Locals are warm and welcoming (one chap even offers to hang your coat up). The bar staff are attentive and knowledgeable and the recommended house pinot is a great tip. If you want a quiet drink at the weekend this place might not be for you, but for Friday night frolics that incorporates live music and a real sense of occasion – this place is a winner (although the potential £10 admission for such nights may put some people off).
The Food
Expect reasonably priced pub grub that is far superior to anything dished out in a JD Wetherspoon joint. Pork loin, and bangers and mash are the staple but food here is just a precursor to dancing your boots off. The veggie bean burger is £4.95 and comes with a mess of chips and coleslaw. Beware: portions are large and may hinder future dance moves.
The Drink
It’s not breaking any new territory - but who cares? Pints of lager for men and a glass of white wine for the lady…okay, it’s not that old-fashioned but prices are reasonable (without being cheap) and drinks are simple and served with a smile. Kronenbourg, Fosters and Becks Vier all available on tap.
The Last Word
This is a quaint, ramshackle sort of place. The owner runs around in a bowler hat making sure everyone feels at home, and the food is really cheap and pretty darn good. Overall, the eccentric nature of The Castle is truly refreshing.
