The ViewLondon Review
Quietly subdued, classic pub with a great selection of draught beer.
The Venue
The Chamberlain sits adjacent to the lobby of the hotel by the same name. Both are run by Fullers. The decor is rich, detailed and generally in good nick. The large oak bar angles across a corner by the entrance, which affords plenty of horizontal space for all of the draught pumps. The bar is attractively carved and corniced. Hardwood floors run throughout and are polished to shine and there’s plenty of seating throughout, whether it’s on high stools by the window, soft sofas on a mezzanine or restaurant seating at the rear of the pub.
One wall features red velvet wallpaper, ornamental wall lights in ornate gold and an assortment of framed mirrors, whilst another wall is lined with bookshelves. It all adds up to a warm, clean and cosy environment, if ever so slightly sterile, which is infinitely preferable to a sticky floor and dingy corners.
The Atmosphere
The staff at The Chamberlain are very professional if a bit sombre in their tidy black shirts. However, they know how to pull a real pint. The clientele is largely made up of subdued professionals. There is no music playing, so there’s a nice buzz of conversation without being accompanied by a thumping beat. As such, it caters to a more grown-up crowd.
The Food
Feeling peckish? There is a lovely meat or vegetarian sharing platter with lots of variety in their finger food offerings - perfect to pick at with a pint of real ale or a glass of wine. For heartier appetites there are starters, mains and desserts – standard pub fare like pasta, burgers or braised lamb shank at reasonable prices for The City. The dining area at the back of The Chamberlain is book-lined and quiet - ready for a leisurely meal.
The Drink
As a Fullers pub, you expect a good choice of cask conditioned ales, and they don’t disappoint at The Chamberlain. Discovery Blond, Chiswick Bitter, London Pride, ESB, and Honeydew appeal to a range of beer tastes. Peroni, Becks, Carling and Guinness are also on offer. As if that isn’t enough, beer lovers can explore the world through bottled offerings like Anchor Steam Beer, Brahma, Brooklyn Lager, Speights Gold Medal, Erdinger Weiss and Titanic Stout - it’s the United Nations of beer. If none of that pulls your pint, then there is a handful each of white, red and rose wine, most of which is available by the glass or bottle.
The Last Word
For a quiet place to chat and catch up with friends, The Chamberlain is well worth seeking out. Its excellent range of beer offers something for everyone.
