An interesting pub situated directly opposite the famous Riverside Studios in West London, The Chancellors provides beer and food for a rare mix of media darlings and grizzled Hammersmith locals.

The Venue
Similar to so many traditional pubs that are situated on the corners of housing estates, The Chancellors has retained a classic feel with colourful hanging baskets outside. As you enter, you’re confronted with Queen Vic-style decor which is apt given the framed photograph behind the bar of the landlady with Barbara Windsor. Echoes of Riverside’s illustrious past ripple through the pub, reverberating off the brass plates and goblets adorning the shelf above the bar. Dozens of framed and signed photographs of celebrities from Terence Stamp to Chris Evans take pride of place on the mock-Tudor walls.

Traditional fireplaces are situated at either end of the pub with a large screen TV showing a constantly refreshing Ceefax page detailing the latest betting at William Hill, demonstrating the chasm that can sometimes separate the customers during the evening here. A very moderate yet intimate outside seating area is also available.

The Atmosphere
The atmosphere at The Chancellors depends on the clientele. An afternoon pint could result in you sharing the entire establishment with an old man nursing a Guinness who has nowhere else to go. However, if there has been a programme recorded or play performed at the Riverside Studios earlier in the day, the atmosphere will change considerably. An unconventionally popular haunt of Studio employees from runners to thespians, The Chancellors does a very brisk trade thanks to its advantageous closeness to this legendary theatrical venue.

The Food
Expect the usual pub food fare here with snacks, toasties and sandwiches that are modest yet reminiscent of the classic pub grub you’d treat yourself to on an excursion to a remote and timeless countryside village. The human touch to your food is still evident (and not in a bad way).

The Drink
The pints are reasonably priced and the beers on tap include Fosters, Fosters Super Chilled, Stella Artois, Kronenberg, Carlsberg and John Smith. The only ale on tap here is Courage but it’s a full and flavoursome pint nonetheless.

The Last Word
The Chancellors is a traditional and quiet venue for those who can’t bear the thumping music of a pub trying to be a club. It’s worth it just to see the weather-beaten and troubled-looking septuagenarians sitting side by side with theatrical flavours of the month.
