The ViewLondon Review
The City Pride is a run of the mill pub-cum-bar on the road overlooking Clerkenwell station.
The Venue
More wine bar than pub, City Pride is certainly not representative of the city it is so proud of. The blonde wood and beaming lights simply highlight the rest of the bar's naff look. The polished silver of the beer taps looks like a cheap bar doing its best. The high tables and chairs are perfect for the spiky haired young City boys to puff out their chests in full peacock style plume to the rest of the pub.
There is more seating in a walled off area adjacent to the bar, but you have to ring up quick for these comfortable sofas as they are rapidly reserved in the evenings. There is also a first floor bar available for private functions. There are plasma screens stuck all over the pub, circling the punters like vultures, drawing the eyes to their crystal clear screens.
The Atmosphere
Week nights are busy and filled with collars and ties that the nearby offices require of their workers. It certainly doesn't attract a creative, arty crowd and you would fear for anybody with a more alternative look than a leather jacket or longer hair than the ubiquitous footballer’s mullet. The City boys of City Pride would surely tear them apart. If you're looking for a Clerkenwell bar for football then it may tempt you. Spanish football is shown on Saturday and Sunday nights, as well as all Premiership and Champion’s League matches.
The Drink
The City Pride is a Fullers pub as it so proudly displays on its Union Jack backed sign. The ales are therefore from the brewery: London Pride, ESB and the newest beer Jack Frost. Spirit stocks are good and it’s apt that there are a number of them perfect for the down in one. Jagermeister, Goldschlager, Aftershock and Apple Sours all compete for the pleasure. In terms of lager there’s Staropramen, Fosters, Stella and Carlsberg.
The Last Word
The City Pride is excellent in terms of the amount of screens there are visible, but when the football dries up there isn’t all that much left.
