We held our wedding reception at The Clarendon in late July this year. All the staff at The Clarendon were fantastic from beginning to end. Not only did they provide a fabulous champagne reception on the terrace (with mini fish pies and pea and broad bean risotto), followed by a sit down meal in the restaurant downstairs, we also left The Clarendon to completely transform the whole venue, upstairs and downstairs, decorating and following our seating plan. We totally relied on the team there and they delivered! The food was delicious and we received so many compliments from our guests. The service was excellent, no glass was left empty and the waiting staff remained cheerful throughout. We could not have been happier with the service we received from The Clarendon and would highly recommend them for a large party or simply lunch on the terrace. A gem in Holland Park.
A super place for eating outside on the terrace! Went to the Clarendon for lunch whilst staying at the Kensington Hilton. We had salad nicoise and goats cheese and beetroot salad starters and wild sea bass and pork belly for mains. All well cooked and nicely presented. Service was friendly and efficient. Will definately go back when in the area next. Heard they do good Sunday roasts too!!
Went to the Clarendon in Notting Hill for the first time at the weekend. Can't believe its been there for 2 years without me knowing it. Tucked away behind Elgin Crescent, its in a quite spot but worth tracking down. We went with some friends for dinner and had an amazing meal on the terrace. The food is imaginative in an area now full of pizza restaurants. My husband had steak tartare, and i had the open lasagne with scallops, then we shared a delicious chateaubriand. The best was saved till last...for pudding we had the "naughty finger" which is like a luxury twix served with salty caramel ice cream. Will definitely be back....
You can definitely see why they need to have so many discount offer! I have never received worse service anywhere! Such a shame because the food is great, especially the Chateaubriand. The staff seem not to care in the slightest and when the wrong food arrived (TWICE!), both staff were very rude, not at all apologetic and actually quite aggressive.
One of the worst dining experiences we've had in a while.
Just got back from an amazing dinner at The Clarendon and wanted to recommend that you all try it and see what a lovely place it is.Stepping in through the side door almost feels like you are stepping into Grandma's kitchen with scrubbed wooden floors and tables. The chefs are happy to show off their skills in the open kitchen as soon as you step in.We were shown to a gorgeous table by the window where we were served our cocktails and offered a variety of bread, which we were told, was baked fresh that morning. It certainly tasted fresh. There was a great selection of dishes to choose from and we ended up sharing the Chateaubriand which was perfectly cooked and went so well with our Aussie Cab Sav.Then there was my favourite part the pudding and The Clarendon certainly didn't disappoint here. I thoroughly recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding.Really looking forward to going back for Sunday roast on the Terrace sometime this summer. The only niggle I have is that the bathrooms are in the basement which makes them a little stuffy and when there is a big party upstairs there can sometimes be a bit of a wait. But don't let this stop you. I'm sure if you visit during the week it is a lot quieter.
Went here for a friends 30 birthday drinks and have left with a bitter taste after experiencing some of the work customer service I have received in a long time.
To start on a positive - if you are looking for an interesting place to go for a drink that if off the beaten track then this could be a place for you. if you are looking however to eat a meal here in the restaurant then I would avoid.
From the moment we sat down we were treated to surly disinterested service. All of us voiced the opinion unprompted that we felt uncomfortable. The food took over forty minutes to arrive and almost brought tears to my eyes when it was just short of being horrible. My duck was cold, the vegetables undercooked the raspberry compote invisible. All this for the princely sum of £17.50 - I left half my plate. My friend ordered a steak cooked medium, this arrived greasy unappealing and well done. We struggled to the end. When I complained to the waiter who we had to prompt to serve us several times he didn't apologise, barely acknowledging my complaint. They had the gall then to include service in the bill with no hint that this was optional. All in all an appalling over priced meal that left me feeling genuinely disgusted at having to fork out so much money for such a nasty experience.
Good customer service can count for a lot and even, in some cases, turn around a experience of mediocre food this is something The Clarendon would, in my opinion, benefit from recognising.
Fabulous food at a great prices
Have been half a dozen times and not yet had a bad meal - particularly good for sunday lunch.... superb roast beef and yorkshire pudding with amazing gravy.
Deserts (I am told and certainly they tasted it) all home made which is very unusual these days.
Can't recommend it enough!
I have visited the Clarendon several times since its opening over a year ago and it has really turned a corner recently! They have some really interesting dishes and the bad service which has been holding it back seems to be a thing of the past. My last two visits have been great. Check it out !
Went to the Clarendon for a meal last week, I live in the area and went on a recommendation from a friend ....really intersting menu (great desserts btw) quite expensive but good portion sizes. Also, it has an outdoor terrace for pre-dinner drinks which was great
Will be back again!!
We recently organised a birthday party for 25 people at the Clarendon.
The good: Organizing with the manager was easy and pleasant. The venue is great, with a wonderful terrace and well decorated main dining area. The staff was friendly (mostly), despite being obviously stressed to have such a large group. The shared app platters were fantastic. The menu was very interesting, and the food was pretty tasty, although I suspect it would be better if they only had to prepare for a normal size dinner party. That said, they came pretty close to serving everyone at the same time - which was impressive.
The not so good: the offering felt over priced. I would be more certain, but I'm holding out that under normal circumstances (i.e. a group of 4) the food would have enough 'wow' to justify the roughly 20 quid per plate. Even though they served us pretty close to simultaneously, it took almost an hour. Again, I blame the huge party size, and not necessarily the kitchen.
The other: The Clarendon is most certainly all Gastro, and not at all Pub.
We'll definitely be going back. I'll let you know how it goes with a normal size group.
Eight of had a family dinner here in September 2009, not great:- Menu was pretty average- Waiting staff are very inexperienced, had no clue on which wines to recommend, or even how their steaks are best served-
Wine came out half way through main course (10 minutes after ordering)- Steaks were thin and overcooked- Oysters were not fresh-
They won't let you take a wine glass outside to enjoy a cigarette, and when you go outside, the manager sat there needlessly and listened to our conversation
Overall, I was embarrassed by the experience. This place needs new management as they seemed completely oblivious to what a farce our whole dining experience was - needless to say we left before even looking at the dessert menu.
Went to The Clarendon a couple of weeks ago with friends.
It's a great looking restaurant with a fantastic, spacious terrace upstairs, and decked out in the usual gastropub clutter – wooden tables, chalked up blackboards, chunky candles and vintage chandeliers.
The food is delicious, and not overly expensive, and the wine is pretty good, too. My friends had succulent steaks with a large bowl of chips, while I had a generous warm goats cheese and beetroot salad with walnuts.
The only criticism I'd have is to do with the service, which needs lot of polishing, particularly as the clientele increases. Sullen waitresses ignored us for a longer than was necessary, while the food service was rather too slow.
Everyone has to vacate the outside terrace by 10pm to cut down on neighbourhood noise, which is absolutely fine, but we were asked by at least 4 different people to go inside just as we had been given our puddings (eventually)!
We had to gobble our puddings down and beat a hasty retreat inwards. Five minutes later, the manager came to apologise about the pestering behaviour of the staff.
Improve the service, and you have a great, local gastropub. We won't be going back til we've heard the service has achieved this.
The Clarendon is amazing! Slightly hidden away but everything is so good: the food, the drinks, the decor: everything.
I practically live there already and have never had a bad experience.
Even the customers are nice which is unusual in this area.
Although I dont want it to become too popular, you must go.
Excellent food at The Clarendon and the chateaubriand was superb. All the staff are very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere great. Prices are reasonable also. Definitely recommended.
Great pub, excellent food. A must if you're in the area.
