The ViewLondon Review
A well-kept secret on the affluent streets of northwest London, The Clifton welcomes you with open arms.
The Venue
Hidden among town houses on a residential street in St John’s Wood, the Clifton is a true gem that you’d normally only stumble upon by accident or hear about by word of mouth. Around 200 years old, the Clifton Hotel was once a hunting lodge and it now exudes a traditional pub feel with a small island bar, two separate seating areas, a conservatory and a small garden set back from the pavement at the front. Mismatched wooden furniture, comfy leather seating and interesting artwork make this pub a cosy home from home.
The Atmosphere
It looks and feels like you’ve walked into someone’s living room. It’s popular with locals, although they don’t stare and make you feel unwelcome if you’re not one. The Clifton is incredibly laid back and cosy with friendly staff, and remains surprising but pleasantly quiet, even during evenings and weekends.
The Food
Possibly the only thing that lets the Clifton down slightly, although this could be set to change under its new management. A somewhat limited menu serves traditional hearty favourites such as bangers and mash, burgers and roast dinners, for around £7.00 - £12.00. Good sized portions and quite tasty, with lashings of gravy and fresh vegetables. However there’s little in the way of light bites and bits to pick at and share, apart from the bar snacks which include generous helpings of crunchy wasabi peas, Japanese crackers and pistachio nuts.
The Drink
There’s a great selection of wines scrawled on chalk boards, plus the usual lagers such as Stella, Fosters and Carling and ales including Green King IPA, Bombardier and London Pride, with regular guest ales.
The Last Word
The Clifton is a great place to while away a few hours of an evening or weekend, and you may spot the odd celeb hoping to remain unnoticed in this little-known gem. Go, but don’t tell everyone about it.
