The ViewLondon Review
As pretty as a picture, this is the perfect example of what quaint Greenwich has to offer.
The Venue
You couldn’t choose a better location for a pub like The Coach and Horses than its secluded spot on the edge of Greenwich Market. The quaint location is further enhanced by the cutesy traditional aesthetic of the pub, black and white colourscheme, period features and a pretty hanging sign. Inside, it’s even cosier with big squishy sofas, fireplaces, simple wooden tables and chairs, and feature lighting. This is all brought up to date with funky prints on the walls. It makes for a pleasant respite from the hubbub of the market just outside. However, if you want to enjoy the bustling market atmosphere then there are picnic tables situated outside for alfresco drinks.
The Atmosphere
Being Greenwich, the Coach and Horses attracts a lot of tourists and well-to-do locals. The footfall of people traffic from the market almost guarantees an upbeat ambience here and the hustle and bustle of the marketplace does make its way across the threshold. Still, the pleasant setting of this pub and the extremely friendly staff help to keep it from mirroring the sometimes frantic feeling of the busy stalls just outside and manages to calm it all down, thankfully.
The Food
The food menu on offer at the Coach and Horses isn’t the most inspiring but it’s certainly a step up from most pub menus. Salads and sandwiches make up a bulk of the choices, appealing to those customers after a quick and easy bite to refuel before hitting the market again. However, at almost £8 a pop, a sarnie here isn’t the cheapest. Mains are better value, with a choice of several British favourites priced around the £10 mark. You know the drill, fish and chips, bangers and mash, burgers...inspiring – or not. However, they do mix it up with crab ravioli and lighter linguini dishes.
The Drink
The Coach and Horses claims to have one of the biggest draught selections in Greenwich and that’s believable. The selection includes Amstel, Paulaner, Adnams, Bombardier...a good choice of quality brews that have had some thought put into them. Their wine list is also impressive with a choice of a half dozen reds and as many whites, well priced at £12-£30 for the selection that includes some more unusual grape varieties like grenache and syrah.
The Last Word
The Coach and Horses is a pub straight out of a storybook. Well, if storybooks spoke of pubs it would be. Quaint, cute and utterly charming, it’s also got substance.
