The ViewLondon Review
The Cock Tavern rules Britannia in the heart of Fitzrovia with tradition and style.
The Venue
The Cock Tavern is an old boozer that has evolved over time but kept its Victorian roots. Located in Fitzrovia, the pub is a pretty proposition from the outside with vast glass lanterns lighting your way in.
Inside, the fairly narrow bar goes down the traditional route with plenty of brass and dark wood to get sentimental about. The key feature is the large wooden arch that divides the pub into two sections and looks as if everything was built around it. There is plenty of seating with wide, comfortable green cushions propped on ledges being the pick of the places to plant yourself.
The Atmosphere
Unlike some of the smaller pubs in the area, or those that don’t puff out their proverbial chests whilst pimping their glass lanterns, The Cock Tavern is no well-kept secret. The clientele is a mixture of workers, tourists and shoppers but the deluge of bodies is a positive as the sense of inclusion prevails.
The Food
No surprises here unless the smell of sausage and mash and fish and chips is a new and flabbergasting aroma for your nostrils. The tourists seem to appreciate the simple menu though and coupled with the Victorian building there is a good amount of Britishness to the whole endeavour.
The Drink
If you prefer your prices a little lower than the West End is happy to charge then this is your pub. The Samuel Smith brewery keep things in house with their own range of drinks and hence prices are kept low. The usual fare is on offer with own brand soft drinks and spirits and Taddy and Alpine lager on draught.
The Last Word
With an appealing mix of people and a lively atmosphere, The Cock Tavern is a fine place to head for any occasion.
