The ViewLondon Review
The Comedy is a boozy venue for live music, a game of pool and laughs aplenty.
The Venue
If you look carefully, there are the bones here of a really handsome skeleton (in the form of high ceilings, mouldings and cornices); however, the muscles have been allowed to sag a bit with age. The Comedy could do with a bit of cosmetic surgery to bring it up to snuff; beginning with the hideous carpet that appears to have been chosen for its ability to disguise stains. Spread over three floors, there are two large pool tables and a bar upstairs, a drinking den on the ground floor and a basement venue open every evening for live music, comedy and karaoke.
The Atmosphere
The clientele at The Comedy is rather blokey – it’s not the place to frequent if you’re offended by large tables of guys effin' and blindin.' It's amusing enough for one drink, but will soon start to annoy. However, the bar staff are friendly and do a decent job of keeping the crowd in some kind of order.
The Food
They have a two meals for nine quid board that offers nothing exciting but is good value. This good value continues into their main menu where you can buy a main course and a pint, and still have change from a tenner. It is standard pub grub here - heavy on carbs and fat, but good stodge for lining your belly without emptying your wallet.
The Drink
Again the emphasis is on value for money. Two cocktails for £7.50 are sure to get your night off to a good start, or stump for a pitcher of cocktails for £9.95. A number of different draught lagers (Peroni being the most exotic) are on offer with a very limited election of wines.
The Last Word
The West End is awash with trendy, stylish watering holes. The Comedy is more like something you'd find in Croydon Town Centre, but that's not a slight. Sometimes you tire of the glitz and want a cheap night out. Now who’s had the last laugh?
