The ViewLondon Review
A lovingly run bar and restaurant in the heart of the Grove Park area of Chiswick, The Copper Cow is a favourite with families, couples and even dogs. The frozen margaritas and half-price Monday ensure this is a busy, buzzing place any night of the week.
The Venue
The Copper Cow is something of a home from home for the young picture perfect families of Grove Park. Positioned at the end of a row of local stores and surrounded by houses, this is an idyllic spot to lunch, sup or simply enjoy a few drinks.
The decor comprises ceiling fans, wooden slatted blinds and a panelled bar at the centre of it all. The various references to cows come in the shape of pictures and ornaments whilst the large, low-hanging copper lights over the bar are an unusual feature. Tables are limited but there are more out of sight through the arch at the back where there are highchairs available. The trestle tables with benches outside mean there’s room for many more on a summer’s evening.
The Atmosphere
The strength of feeling for The Copper Cow is plain for all to see. The relaxed and friendly ambience is genuine. Dogs and children are welcomed with open arms by the affable husband and wife team. They even have their own dog called Colonel Alfie. Theme evenings such as Halloween night are well attended and enjoyed by adults and children year after year.
The Food
The claim on the menu that the burger here (£9.50) is the best in Chiswick is certainly brave but disappointingly fails to deliver. The sirloin steak is a better option and comes with plenty of vegetables on the side. Alternatively, the spicy chicken fajitas - almost enough for two to share, despite the lack of any salad garnish - is recommended, whilst the crispy cod and chips seems to be a popular choice. The Monday Madness deal means you might struggle to get a table but with a whopping 50 per cent off all food, what’s not to like?
There is also a children’s menu featuring burgers, chicken, spaghetti and sausages all at £5 with a selection of ice creams to follow at £2.
The Drink
Although a retro frozen margarita machine is obviously a pull here, The Copper Cow is more of a wine bar with a small and reasonably priced list (£11-£30). The Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect foil to a balmy evening while the house red is cheap at the price if a little tart. Becks, Corona and Magners are all served by the bottle while the draught offering includes Carlsberg, London Pride and Guinness.
The Last Word
The Copper Cow is a great place to come for a casual lunchtime or evening with friends and family. The relaxed attitude towards children and pets makes it the perfect hangout for families during the day and the transformation to cosy wine bar at night is seamless.
