The ViewLondon Review
A beautiful-looking pub with some good Greene King beers, it’s just hard to shake the feeling that The Cricketers is just a tourist’s idea of a great London pub.
The Venue
So traditional it hurts, many of the pubs in Richmond benefit from the picturesque location and The Cricketers is no different. Set in a tall red brick building with the pub’s name built into the brick as well as appearing on a separate sign, it certainly makes its presence known. The front period windows are a nice touch and are well flanked by pretty baskets filled with colourful flowers. Inside, wood dominates, from the heavy main bar to the seating and large tables. It resembles a hundred other pubs across London but the outdoor tables give it an edge on some of its competitors.
The Atmosphere
As with many watering holes in and around Richmond, The Cricketers has that country pub feel to it. It can get busy with people spilling out onto the street, but that hardly seems to matter when the exterior of the pub is so pretty to look at. The staff are very friendly and seem to know many of the punters, bantering with them in the way you can only do with regulars.
The Food
As with many Greene King pubs, the food at The Cricketers is simple pub grub with Sunday roasts for under £8, ploughman’s lunches, large sharing platters for just under a tenner and the usual mix of sausage and mash, fish and chips, and burgers. Hardly anything to get excited about.
The Drink
As you’d expect, there is a decent selection of real ales on tap at The Cricketers, although they’re solely Greene King brews such as Abbot Ale, Old Speckled Hen and Greene King IPA. And the prices are very good for the area with a pint of ale averaging at just over £3. Lager drinkers are also kept happy with an above-average choice including Staropramen and Grolsch.
The Last Word
Although this is a decent pub with some good beers, with so many excellent pubs in and around Richmond, it suffers in comparison to the stiff competition.
