The ViewLondon Review
Let’s say you were a low-budget student filmmaker and you needed an authentic 1960s old man pub for a pivotal scene – The Crown would be perfect!
The Venue
The Crown is historic and atmospheric, but not in a good way. Unlike the gorgeous historic gin palaces of years gone by, this is a leftover from a less attractive era – the 1960s. Nothing looks like it’s been updated; the walls are yellow, having yellowed even more over the years to a tobacco colour, there is a shabby carpet, a flat screen TV broadcasting horse racing, a tattered old England flag and some dartboards.
The Atmosphere
The Crown attracts an old-man crowd. Burly builders, pensioners and other local types call this home attended to by a tough old bird of a bar matron. Don’t be surprised to see two blokes argue in the corner as another gives you evils. Few strangers ever wander in here as the outside is less than welcoming. The air is often blue with the ‘effing and blinding of the patrons.
The Drink
Webster Ale seems to be the only authentic choice. Fosters, Strongbow, Guinness and John Smith line up along the bar with a smattering of spirits hanging behind. It’s cheap at The Crown with a half pint of ale coming in at just £1.50.
The Last Word
In two words? Don’t bother.
