The ViewLondon Review
The only thing castle-like about it is its name, but The Dartmouth Castle does provide a solid night out with prime food and drink.
The Venue
This is one of the better Hammersmith venues – set away from the rabble that frequent many of the King Street pubs. The Dartmouth Castle was renovated in 2005, and some locals mourn the passing of a classic old boozer, but they have done a nice job of cleaning it up without stripping it of any character. The bar is rectangular with very high ceilings and cozy nook up above (perfect for cozying up with the one you love). Out front is a large beer garden – although there are only tall shrubs separating you from a fairly busy road.
The Atmosphere
The bar staff are friendly and they do a fairly busy lunch business for the local residents and workers, and evenings attract a good mix of clientele. The Dartmouth Castle is a popular Sunday lunch spot – especially in the summer months when you can enjoy your roast outdoors. The service can be a bit slow, but it allows you more time to soak up the rays.
The Food
They do a really nice menu here. The lamb has been raved about by many people as has the steak and Guinness pie. There are daily changing specials as well as a well-rounded range of regular selections. Prices are above a Wetherspoons but within what you would expect from a gastropub.
The Drink
They offer a couple of real ales on tap along with draught lagers and a good selection of wines.
The Last Word
The Dartmouth Castle is no good when you are in a hurry – the kitchen takes time to prepare the food and you won’t have time to soak in the environment. This is a good solid option in this part of West London for meeting a couple friends when you have the time to linger over a meal and some drinks.
