The ViewLondon Review
A dominant fixture of Wimbledon Village High Street, the Dog and Fox is a large Young’s pub that strives to feed and water the masses the classier way.
The Venue
Cavernous and high ceilinged, the pub is split in to a dining area with table service, and an expansive main bar area in which an eclectic array of furniture enables vast number of customers to be seated comfortably. The interior is a tad hit and miss, with the restaurant area boasting tasteful lighting and attractive wood panelling, and a main space that borders on dingy, despite the inclusion of a few plush sofas and armchairs and a rich burgundy colour scheme.
The large patio provides plenty of outdoor seating, and is a great vantage point for observing the hustle and bustle of the surrounding area during the summer months, however, it is not really the impressive ‘beer garden’ that the venue sells it as.
The Atmosphere
Its popularity and size mean the Dog and Fox can become quite noisy during peak serving hours, and those who prioritise space and peacefulness when it comes to an evening at the pub may be better off in one of Wimbledon’s more rustic and traditional venues. The pub plays host to a varied clientele, and this diversity, along with the friendly service, give it an inclusive, welcoming feel.
The Food
The Dog and Fox has separate menus for the bar and restaurant - the former offering standard pub grub like cottage pie and beef burgers (both £10.95) at top-end prices. The restaurant menu is a somewhat more elegant affair, with seared scallops (£9.95), and a venison, hare and pheasant pie (£14.95) amongst the dishes served. There is also a children’s menu, with meals priced at £7 each, which includes a smaller version of the pub’s popular Sunday roast.
A unique feature is the special banqueting table set apart in a semi-enclosed and beautifully presented space next to the open kitchen. This can be reserved for parties of a minimum of 12 people, with a set three course menu served at £29 a head.
The Drink
Pints of lager and cider average at £4, whilst ale drinkers have the usual Young’s range available to them, as well as a couple of seasonal guest ales at any given time. The choice of wine has been paid particular attention to at the Dog and Fox, with sparkling and dessert sections on the list, as well as detailed tasting notes. Prices start at £15.90 a bottle.
The Last Word
The Dog and Fox is a good option for those seeking a lively pub with a wide selection of food to choose from. However, you suspect that the venue’s size and the prominence of its location are what really draw the crowds in.
