The ViewLondon Review
Elegant, sophisticated and chic, The Donovan Bar at Rocco Fortes Browns Hotel has the feel of an English gentlemans club with a contemporary twist. The VenueAs you might expect of the oldest hotel in London, Browns boasts a rich and star-studded history. Beyond the grand facade of this historic building lies the intimate oasis of exclusive luxury that is The Donovan Bar. The decor, designed by Olga Polizzi, is stylish and elegant, whilst still managing to feel comfortable and welcoming. Modern leather seating and wooden floors contrast with an original stained glass window.
The bar is named after the late, great London photographer, Terence Donovan, whose black and white photographs adorn the walls. Indeed, an alcove of the bar provides a seating area that has been dubbed ‘the naughty corner’, displaying some of Donovan’s more risque work.
The AtmosphereThe Donovan Bar exudes an atmosphere of refined sophistication and attracts a chic crowd. Whether stopping off for a pre-dinner drink or out to impress a date, this is the sort of place that is guaranteed to add a touch of class to your evening. Considering that the bar is located in the heart of Mayfair, just a stone’s throw from Bond Street, it’s surprisingly quiet, and certainly feels about as far from the madding crowd as you ever get in Central London. Better still, the staff are charming and the service impeccable, and live Jazz is often performed.
The FoodA good selection of quality bar food is available, ranging from an enticing array of international tapas to more substantial burgers and sandwiches, all beautifully presented. Bowls of delicious nuts and olives placed on each table are a nice touch, as are the complementary canapes offered around from time to time.
The DrinkWhile there is plenty of choice when it comes to wines, beers and spirits, it is the huge choice of phenomenally good cocktails at The Donovan Bar that really places it head and shoulders above the rest. The new age martinis are delectable, and the Space Race - a delicious blend of rose vodka, lychee liqueur, cointreau and cranberry and guava juices created by resident mixologist Antonio Dandrea - won a national cocktail competition. The drinks are by no means cheap, with most nearing twice the average price of a cocktail in London, but then again they are at least twice as nice as most!
The Last WordIt’s certainly not a budget option, but if it’s sublime cocktails and an atmosphere of refined sophistication you’re after, then The Donovan Bar is the place to come.
