The ViewLondon Review
With one of the most friendly welcomes in London, the excellent customer service makes this serene venue a welcome stop for many, be it for a quiet drink over a few glasses wine or a wholesome meal from the interesting and varied menu. The VenueThe interior of The Duchess of Kent is a first-rate representation of the modern pub with its comfortable modest living room feel. A cosy open fire roars in the corner, projecting heat into the room filled with natural wood tables, plush velvet chairs and comfortable low slung sofas. An interesting selection of old fashioned ornaments, pictures and plants dress the room, and floor-to-ceiling book shelves packed with an impressive literary collection act as a divider between the bar and restaurant. With a large, undercover, outdoor section there is a little haven for the smokers, though you’d be mad to leave the comfort of the warm room on a winters night!
The AtmosphereSimple, comfortable and unpretentious, the homely ambience of The Duchess of Kent is most welcoming. Pleasant music tinkers quietly in the background and countless scented candles flicker serenely from the tables and shelves, filling the room with glorious seasonal fragrances that enhance the low lighting.
The FoodWith an aim to remain popular within a competitive market both the drinks and food menu at The Duchess of Kent are regularly revised and updated and, as a result, compliment the seasons perfectly, offering an evolving menu to regulars.
The interesting and distinctive food menu contains old classics with modern twists, the dishes combining a wide variety of unusual ingredients and introducing new tastes to your palates. The final result can be a little hit and miss - the mushroom toast is slightly soggy as a result of the addition of too much cream and the sage flavour in the pumpkin and sage risotto can prove overwhelming. However, the seemingly homemade piccalilli is packed full of an impressive selection of different ingredients, is delightfully sharp and tangy and leaves you wanting more.
The DrinkThe regularly updated drink selection at The Duchess of Kent remains constant in its offering of a good assortment of continental lagers and ales on tap, complimented by its varied bottle selection and impressively extensive wine list. Staff are on hand to offer recommendations and the more than adequate spirit selection ensures that there is a drink here to suit everyone.
The Last WordThe Duchess of Kent proves that the ever-increasing trend of gastropubs spreading their way across London is a welcome addition to rather tired pub scene.
