Nobody would blame this pub if it stopped serving at 9pm, or even 10. But it carries on far beyond its ability to offer proper service or good - even palatable - food.

When my skate and veg finally arrived (it was the only thing left on the menu) it was cold, bony and would have been inedible had there had been more than two mouthfuls to it. The best that can be said is that it did not disrupt my diet. But really, £13 for this achrymorphic mush? It has been a long time since I got something this bad for this much.

I've eaten the lamb here in the daytime and it was fine (not great but fine); but this place should know its limits. At 10.30pm I would have been happier to be turned down on the food if it meant having more than one poor beleagured barmaid trying to serve 50 people at the bar.

What an amazing genuine and charismatic place- I did not want to leave! I was so impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the all-round good feeling this pub gives out. Long may it prosper.

I just had a kipper pate on superb bread whichI understand they get from the St John restaurant and bakery and a glass of cold white wine - what more could anyone want? (Although I saw a mouth watering menu written up on the blackboards)

The steak sandwich is great for the first four mouthfulls then you discover their secret ingredient, yeast extract; bovril, marmite or something equally disgusting and unwanted powers through the taragon and chilli flakes and sullies the meat. I would have got over this had there been some mayo or indeed a chip to dunk in it.

No chips? No condiments? Come on, its a pub.

Dont go to this pub, the owner treats his staff like dirt. Small wonder they look distant and miserable!

I am shocked by the numerous poor reviews of Eagle. I live right next door and frequent the pub on a daily basis. The staff are unbelievably friendly. There may not be the most extensive list of drinks and dishes, but nonetheless it is most definitely a quality establishment in London. Come after work and drink with the dozens of people that come to socialize at the bar. Its is a guaranteed good time, and if you got at an off hour the intimate setting is a great place for a chat with a mate or client.

I live in Farringdon close to The Eagle and love going out to eat and having a few drinks. After going there once I would never go again.

They have poor, unfriendly service, really bad cocktails and overpriced, low quality, poorly prepared, and even more poorly cooked food! Do yourself a favour and go to the quality chop house opposite. It's so much better than The Eagle.

What a disappointment The Eagle was! Perhaps this pub was great some years ago but now it the food is rubbish, it has an ordinary lager selection and a tatty aray of second hand rickety furniture. The bar staff took ages to take our order. The Pasta was undercooked and the bream was nearly tasteless. Soups were OK.

Do not go to The Eagle. Go spend your money somewhere worthwhile.

What a shame!

Been to The Eagle for some fantastic meals before. Unfortunately, we went again today with friends. You have to pay for your food before you receive your meal, always a risk!

We all ordered within minutes of each other and it ended up being a total shambles. Two meals arrived almost straight away (one was cold). We had to wait 20 minutes for another two meals and 10 minutes later another two.

The last two meals at The Eagle arrived with the salmon virtually raw. We tried talking to the manager and then the owner to get a refund or at least an apology and nothing. They were the rudest staff i've ever encountered with the most appalling attitude and no sense of customer service.

I will not be going back to The Eagle, or recommend anyone else do so. Such a shame for a restaurant we've always enjoyed until now.

I am very surprised by the bad reviews I have read about The Eagle. In a word this place is tremendous. The food at The Eagle was of an excellent standard and I found the staff to be very hospitable and friendly.

Overall it was a lunchtime well spent. Compliments to the chef, and waitresses.

The food at The Eagle was fantastic and the wine was great, and there was a very nice atmosphere. But, the tables are extremely small, big enough for two dinner plates, and there were five of us. We were told that we could not move two tables together as that was their policy.

The manager at The Eagle must get the rudest of the year award. While we were eating she came back and demanded we give up one of the tables as she had more customers waiting. Needless to say she will never see me again at The Eagle - despite the excellent food!

Working in Clerckenwell I have had the opportunity to try The Eagle a few times. Despite an interesting and innovative menu I feel this place is overrated for several reasons and each time I felt like I was doing them a favour for having lunch there. The staff must be trained to remain unfriendly and distant at all costs ?? Also, I think that the menu is over-priced and, no matter if it comes straight from the morning market, it doesn’t justify the high prices. Finally, I don’t really mind having my meal cooked in front of me, but really I am not that keen on smelling like I have been deep fried when I leave.

I was quite surprised by the two reviews I've just read on here about The Eagle so thought I'd write one. The Eagle doesn't offer the pages of printed menu that many places do (there's a Strada down the road). It doesn't offer much flexibility in the dish you order either - you get what is on the menu. I guess the reason is that the menu is decided in the morning, based on what fresh produce they get at the market that day. If you turn up at 2.30pm for Sunday lunch then don't be surprised if you've missed the chance of trying the more popular dishes of the day. If you don't like the sound of any of this then please don't go to The Eagle as you're taking a valuable seat someone else like me could have. If however you want fresh, good quality, interesting food cooked within eyesight then go to The Eagle. They experiment with food - different cuts of meat, different flavours etc so you might not always see something you know you're going to like. That's what I love about this place. Sure you can go for sausage and mash if you don't feel adventurous. I can't think of a bad meal I've had there and I've been going to The Eagle for years. I've had one or two meals I haven't enjoyed but that's been down to picking something I just haven't liked. If you like pork then I can say that some of the pork dishes have been the best I've had anywhere. It also serves good draught beers and you can go there just for a drink although it would be a crying shame.

I went to The Eagle with a small group on Sunday afternoon for lunch and found it extremely disappointing. I could not understand why it was busy with the poor, overpriced fare on offer. The menu only consists of about five or six items but three of those were off the menu when we arrived (about 2.30 pm). Of the meat-heavy choice of chicken and potatoes or sausages with borlotti beans I chose the sausage. The sausages were good quality but more appropraite for a barbecue than a sit down meal. £9.50 for such basic fare did not leave me impressed. There is very little gastro in this pub. Try somewhere on Upper Street instead.

Beware the Eagle is no longer a pub, it should be firmly categorized as a restaurant. Although you can't book a table, and should expect to have to wait for one. You will pay over £9 for 3 sausages with runner and haricot beans and a cabbage leaf. You wont be able to order mash/chips or any vedge side with any main and you won't be alowwed any relish or sauces with your meal. The waiter will tell you that you're not the first to ask for sauces and that they have some in the kitchen but never let them out. Then the chef with piercings and tattoos will scowl at you while munching food in front of you with his hands. Which I'm afraid to say seems to be the attitude of most of the staff. A huge disappointment compared to many excellent gastro pubs in the area.

OK so there's no music at the Eagle, but that's definitely no bad thing...finally somewhere with atmosphere but where you can hear the conversation you are partaking in (let's hope it's interesting!).

I haven't tried the food, but for a drinking hole it's great - chilled, homely, with newspapers if you're early! And it's somewhere in Farringdon that's actually open on a Saturday night!!
