The ViewLondon Review
Set on the busy Merton Road, the Earl Spencer is one of the best pubs in Wandsworth for food and socialising.
The Venue
With huge windows looking onto Merton Road, the Earl Spencer is a great looking venue with lots of tables inside and out – perfect for enjoying the warm weather – and a working log fireplace during the colder months. The venue itself is enormous, which is good as the weekends really bring in the crowds.
The Atmosphere
The Earl Spencer is relaxed with a funky edge that goes with the area, but they don’t play loud music that stops good conversation. The pub also offers free wireless if you want to take your laptop in to do some work. It’s near the Southfields grid, so the pub gets very busy after 7pm and it’s packed full at weekends with locals from Earlsfield and Southfields.
The Food
The food is good but expensive, with the usual Sunday roasts and some good fish dishes including sea bass and bream. But beware of the sloppy service at lunchtime on weekends when the pub is at it’s busiest, as the staff can forget about you and the dishes you’ve ordered can take ages to turn up. However, it is good for dinner during the week and if you happen to arrive right before the kitchen shuts they’ll still serve you.
The Drink
There are at least 12 beers and lagers on tap, along with an impressive wine list with at least 30 international wines up on a blackboard. There’s pretty much everything you need, alcohol-wise, from a local pub.
The Last Word
Locals should be proud of the Earl Spencer. It’s huge, welcomes families, and when they get it right the service and food are very good.
