The food was delicious and the venue is lovely...it's just a shame about the staff who we rude, unhelpful and downright patronising

I went here last night with a friend, having read about it the previous day. It's right next door to Sosho on Tabernacle street, and entered by buzzing at an otherwise unmarked door. My overall impression is a positive one. It's close to the city, and close to Shoreditch, and i expect, considerably less w**ky than Shoreditch House, though not nearly as capacious or well fitted out.

First the positives: The food was excellent, and at a very good price point. Honestly, I’ve never had a better steak in a member’s bar, accompanied by a selection of fresh veg and salads from a DIY salad bar (think Dean and Deluca, rather than Pizza hut buffet). At £12 I was laughing! BBB should take note! Also the wine selection is superb. As a big fan of New World wines, I was delighted to see some of my favourites on the menu (reasonably priced for a member's bar, but mark-ups still over 100%). The bar staff were very very helpful and chatty, and keen to help. Again BBB should really take note.

The only issue for me is that wines are sold on a grid basis, so you select for example a £45 Pinot, and they bring you whatever they have in stock. Now clearly this gives them the advantage that they can chop and change the wines without having to print new menus, and people with little knowledge of wine can get to sample new wines easily (they also have an excellent sampling station, much like "the sampler" in Islington). The problem is that if you actually know about wine, you'd much rather buy wine by the named bottle. To be fair to them this is possible, but I had to request the tasting notes, and then ask which bottle equated to which price point on the grid.

Really this is a small gripe set against a superb wine-list, very congenial atmosphere, and superb food and service. I just fear that they’ve made their USP being a New World wine specialist, and therefore are likely to attract custom from people that already know a fair amount about New World wine.
