The ViewLondon Review
Five minutes from Brixton tube station, the Effra is a hidden gem, boasting live jazz music and an easy-going atmosphere. The VenueThe decor has a simple, no frills appeal, with wooden floors, pleasant lighting, and an inviting island bar. The back of the pub is given over to live jazz and the numerous framed photos and plaudits lining the walls show just how respected this venue is. There’s also a snug, attractively lit beer garden out back if you feel like cooling off.
The AtmosphereThe Effra has a truly Brixtonian flavour, being both friendly and lively. An easy-going mix of locals rub shoulders and relax to a soundtrack of live jazz. Whether you come to chat or to soak up the music, you’ll enjoy a great atmosphere. Plus, if you’re a football fan, there are regular low-volume screenings of Premiership fixtures.
The FoodThe food is of course Caribbean, and it’s the real deal. There’s a great selection of meals and lighter snacks on offer. Try the Oxtail soup, with a deep smoky taste and a real kick of spice coming through. There’s also a delicious jerk chicken, cooked tenderly with just the right amount of fire in the marinade. The prices are in line with most of the local West Indian outlets, and you can tell all the food is fresh.
The DrinkThe Effra doesn’t have a huge range of wine or beer but it does offer some great deals on pints and pitchers. You can also enjoy some perfectly decent and reasonably priced house reds and whites from about £11.00. Beers on tap include Stella, Grolsch, Carling and a particularly good Guinness.
The Last WordLively most evenings and offering a truly good vibe, the Effra is a great place to chill out, grab a cheap beer and catch some fantastic live music.
