The Venue
Located a two minute walk from Fulham Broadway tube, The Elk Bar is sexy without going over the top. The long bar is a pleasant combination of dark wood, red booths and dim lighting. Cute furniture and hanging lamps create a high end feel but the rural theme, played out with cool modern prints and one unassuming pair of antlers, keeps it down to earth. The bar also manages to pull off red walls without being pretentious - a feat few other bars can rightfully claim to do.
The Atmosphere
On the weekend, this pretty bar transforms into a crowded dance party, where twenty and thirtysomethings can be found singing along to a non-discriminating mix of all time pop favourites from Soft Cell and the B52s to Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse. You are more than welcome to rub up against someone new at The Elk Bar, since everyone is either looking to pick someone up or hoping to be picked up. There is generally a good feeling of bonhomie, even if the competing women are a little overly made up and the competing men a bit drunk.
The Food
The daytime menu is fairly good and reasonably priced with mains and burgers costing £6 or £7. The nighttime menu emphasises groups with its long list of appetisers including mountains of nachos, hummus, duck spring rolls, and large platters of assorted dishes for sharing.
Both menus are fairly limited - this is bar food after all - but if you're starving you can always fill up on a burger.
The Drink
The drinks play a vital role in the success of Elk Bar. In addition to your usual beer and wine, there are a bunch of extras that make you feel a bit special when you order them. There's a decent choice of Champagne, including a couple of rose Champagnes. There is also the long list of sweet and extravagant cocktails available by the glass and jug, which bodes well for the groups of women who frequent this bar. Alacritous bartenders are full of smiles and serve up drinks quickly, despite the huge demand.
The Last Word
Even though The Elk Bar is open late and your feet are sore from shaking your booty, you still won't want to go home at the end of the night.
