The ViewLondon Review
The Exmouth Arms knows how to make the most of what it’s got.
The Venue
Flowers. They can make pretty much anything look nice – and so this is the method that The Exmouth Arms employs to dress up an otherwise simple brick building with little more than a few benches outside on the street. In the summer when the flowers spring into bloom, it’s really quite a sight to behold. Inside, the L-shaped pub is steadfastly traditional and has an airy, light feel. The mix of tables with accompanying chairs and bar stools provide more than enough seating. There is a hint of modernity, however, courtesy of the jukebox – an MP3 jukebox no less!
The Atmosphere
You’ll be sharing the bar space with a painfully cute black and white cat who calls The Exmouth Arms his home. Otherwise, you can expect a mix of locals and commuters stopping off for a pint on their way home. Rarely full to bursting, the pub really comes into its own in the summer months when you can sit outside among the flowers. Otherwise, there is a cosy appeal when the weather turns.
The Drink
Lager and ale is what The Exmouth Arms is all about with the majority of the clientele enjoying a cold pint. The mix on draught is pretty good, too, with Courage Best Bitter, Shepherd Neame Spitfire, John Smiths, Adnams, Guinness, Kronenbourg, Stella Artois, Fosters, Carlsberg and Strongbow. This is bolstered further by their strong selection of bottled beers.
The Last Word
Come on London pubs, you don’t need a full-on beer garden to make the most of the space you’ve got. The Exmouth Arms has made an effort to brighten itself up and is a good example to others.
