The ViewLondon Review
The cornerstone of Clapham Junction, The Falcon is a real locals' pub, good for warm meals with no frills and a decent selection of real ale.The VenueAn old Victorian building, The Falcon appears to be slightly dark and dingy on first inspection. It is, however, a beautifully engraved old wooden building kept in near original condition since its birth. Found on the corner of the high street, it’s hard to miss whether driving or walking.
Inside, the pub has an open plan floor with a central bar. Adequate seating is available around the perimeter and the furniture is in keeping with the decor, but is starting to look a little tired and worn. You’ll find it easy to discover a corner and chat with a friend, given the small personal tables suitable for a company of two.
The AtmosphereThe Falcon is always filled with locals. For those looking to pay a visit from further afield, stand up tall and ignore the cliques and the atmosphere can actually be very enjoyable thanks to the general hustle and bustle of the usually busy pub.
The staff are friendly and very efficient at dealing with crowds of thirsty punters. During the day, The Falcon has a steady pace that slowly ticks over into the evenings, and at weekends the venue is kicked up a notch and plays general knees up party tunes. You can expect to find many drunken customers heading across the road to the kebab shop after last orders.
The FoodThe food in The Falcon and is a combination of hearty British pub grub and a few foreign dishes such as Thai prawns and Cajun chicken. The food is generally of a good standard and the portions are pretty hefty. However, at busier times the standards can drop slightly, not by much but you might get your chips at room temperature or your burger slightly greasy. Mains start at around £6 and desserts come in at the £4 mark. A great choice from the dessert menu is the giant chocolate cake with ice cream, which definitely lives up to its name!
The DrinkThe Falcon has a good selection real ale, lager, wine and spirits. There is a large variety of deals on offer such as double shot sprits for an extra pound and deals on large glasses of wine. A good choice of wine is the Chardonnay, which has a fresh, long taste with an impressive fruit concentration.
The rolling guest ales always give a new flavour to the venue and provides a reason for fans of real ale to keep coming back for more. There are no cocktails and no premium spirits, which is to be expected given the style of the pub.
The Last WordThe Falcon can provide a pleasant eating and drinking environment - if you know the area and the people. It’s a decent local’s pub, especially for real ale lovers.
