The ViewLondon Review
A traditional, old-fashioned pub with a few mod-cons, the Feathers is popular for an after work tipple.
The Venue
Part of the Nicholson’s chain of pubs, directly opposite St James’ Park tube station, the Feathers is an inviting looking boozer with a few picnic tables out the front for the warmer months. Inside, high ceilings, windows and panelled walls contribute to a traditional set-up, with sectioned off drinking and dining areas and a wide staircase leading to an upstairs bar that can be hired out for private events and parties.
The Atmosphere
The decor and clientele make the Feathers a definite pub rather than a bar and it’s a comfortable enough place to lose a few hours. There is predominantly a friendly atmosphere although its location means that it can get very busy on weekday evenings with local office workers and seats are hard to come by. For that reason you may also find yourself waiting at the bar for a while but the staff are as attentive as they can be and get round to you as quickly as possible. Despite the occasional bustle there remains a laid-back vibe where you can still have a conversation with your mates.
The Food
Nothing special as far as the menu is concerned – all your standard pub grub can be found at the Feathers at fairly reasonable prices: scampi and chips, burgers and pies are all available for between £7-£10. For an easy bite to eat while you’re out you could do a lot worse.
The Drink
Ale is the name of the game here, with an impressive selection of regular offerings such as Timothy Taylor, London Pride, Wells Bombardier and Adnams, along with monthly guest ales for those who want to try something new. If ale isn’t your tipple then there are a few bottled and draught lagers on offer, along with a good selection of wines and whiskies, all of which have their own menu to provide more detail than you would normally expect. Prices are relatively cheap for the area so you won’t break the bank by staying for a couple.
The Last Word
Nothing remarkable but still a decent boozer with a traditional feel. If you like your ale then the Feathers may well tickle your fancy.
