The Fire Station is an inviting venue next to Waterloo Station that uses its history as a theme without over-emphasising the point.
The Venue
The building used to be a fully-functioning fire station in the early twentieth century and has been lovingly restored, retaining the shiny red brick walls that look terrific but perhaps rob the place of intimacy. You may brush against the odd piece of rescue memorabilia, such as a red bucket hanging on a hook or an old alarm bell, but these have clearly not been designed to impose or cheapen the place, despite the bright red neon sign outside.
The Atmosphere
This may not be the choice for entertaining a date, given that people don’t usually equate Edwardian fire stations with romance. However, the extensive seating area, attentive bar staff and popular outdoor area guarantee a lively and vibrant atmosphere, ideal for drinks after work or a weekender with close friends. The location of the Fire Station is next to one of the busiest train stations in the capital means that the place is packed out on a seemingly daily basis, which may be off-putting for those who just want a quiet pint.
The Drink
In addition to the restaurant and a substantial bar menu, the bar also possesses a lengthy and unfixed wine list (displayed on a chalkboard behind the bar). A cocktail menu is also on offer, featuring the usual suspects along with a pleasing variety of draught beers including Adnams Broadside, Breakspear, Shepherd Neame Spitfire, London Pride, Young’s Bitter and Marstons Pedigree. Those who prefer soft drinks, however, may want to seek an establishment that doesn’t blatantly sting you as punishment for not drinking alcohol – coke can be double the price of a pint of beer.
The Last Word
Unlike other venues in the area, whose enviable location in the city is used as a way of papering over cracks such as bad service and uninspired decor, The Fire Station has come back from a refurbishment in 2006 markedly improved and brimming with enthusiasm.
