The Fitzrovia is a traditional London boozer that is fast becoming a firm favourite for the Bloomsbury crowd.

The Venue
On the crossroad between Goodge Street and Whitfield Street you’ll find The Fitzrovia, providing a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of Tottenham Court Road. With its pretty hanging baskets and outside picnic tables, there couldn’t be a more welcoming sight to a weary shopper - not to mention stressed workers; The Fitzrovia has long been the popular choice for the many companies that work around Goodge Street.

Upon entering, you are greeted by a typical pub decor. A mixture of comfy chairs, low tables, high stools, and corner bars ensures there are many places to unwind. The colourful dimmed lighting gives the room a warm, homely feel, whilst the fruit machines in the corner only add to the ambience of the room. Outside the pub is a reasonably sized seating area situated on the pavement. Hugely popular in the summer, this area is often heaving with workers having a swift half at lunchtime, so don’t expect to get a seat! Thankfully, the roads and pavements are quiet enough that the drinkers can mill around at ease and not get in anyone’s way.

The Atmosphere
The Fitzrovia is a lively pub at peak drinking hours. Enter at 5.30pm on a Friday and be prepared to wait a while for a drink. Thankfully, this pub is well run, and the bar staff are quick to serve and empties are collected swiftly. If you’re desperate for a table you can ring in advance and reserve one to make sure you are guaranteed a seat – a real bonus not offered in many pubs!

The main clientele here are workers from the surrounding area. Expect to see a range of people from suited and booted office workers to builders from nearby sites. This traditional pub is popular with all and rightly so. On a busy night the room is filled with the low buzz of chatter, yet it’s not somewhere that could ever get too lively. It seems to have found its purpose as an after work drinking hole and has stuck to that.

The Food
If you’re after some traditional pub grub then look no further. The Fitzrovia offers a menu with a wide range of food choices for the hungry lunchtime crowd. Fish and chips, burgers, jacket potatoes, and plates to share to name but a few - all well made and reasonably priced at around £8.00. The steak and onion sandwich is a particularly popular choice at lunchtimes and for those wanting something slightly sweeter, you can even pop in for afternoon tea; £9.50 for a selection of cakes, scones, teas and coffees.

The Drink
Like most pubs, The Fitzrovia offers a wide range of alcoholic drinks for its punters. The tables each have an extensive wine list, and there are decent lagers and real ales on tap. A wine and a beer will set you back around £6, which is pretty standard for Central London.

The Last Word
The Fitzrovia is a decent pub for post work beers, lunchtime spritzers and tasty traditional pub grub.
