The ViewLondon Review
The Florence can be found next to the Shell Petrol Station on the corner of Florence Street, defying first impressions to offer a decent drinking den to the locals. The VenueThe Florence is quite deceiving in appearance. From the outside, it looks like your standard run-of-the-mill local old boys pub, but nothing could be further from the truth. The bar and ethnic music perspire a Latin vibe as do the warm colours. The floor looks like it has been spread with a nice thick layer of marmite whilst the bar has a clean pale turquoise coat of paint over it and a shiny beech wood top. To maintain the sensual feeling, the walls have been painted a deep shade of red with specks of black that warms the soul.
For those that fancy a quick drink, the seating area around the bar is very comfortable and you can be sure that neither your stool nor your table will get knocked over as they each weigh about the same as a baby elephant thanks to their steel legs. The solid pine tabletops provide a firm platform for any beverage you may want to rest on it. For those looking for a table more suited to dining, however, you’ll find three larger tables complete with benches. In this area you’ll also be able to view the flatscreen TV in the corner, tuned into Sky Sports. Those looking to slump on a nice big luxurious leather sofa won’t be disappointed either because there are two that face each other.
To the left of the bar is where things really hot up. Candlelight, warm red rugs draped across walls, and low sofas provide an intimate, cosy environment for those who arrive with partners.
The AtmosphereSultry, warm, and inviting are all words that can be used to describe this chilled out pub. Once you have your drink and you’re sat at your table, the upbeat ethnic sounds temporarily remove you from the fast-paced London lifestyle. However, the barman does take his time, so you should settle in for a lengthy wait for your drink.
The DrinkThe Florence won’t win any awards for originality in the drink stakes, but you can expect to find your favourites, including Peroni, Corona, Magners, Carlsberg, Stella, Carling, Guinness, San Miguel, Spindrift and Grolsch. Prices are average for the area, so you won’t be breaking the bank every time you visit the bar.
The Last WordThe Florence offers a chilled atmosphere and is conveniently hidden from the usual mob pacing up and down Upper Street.
