The ViewLondon Review
Whether you fancy a quiet mid-week drink or a big night out over the weekend, the Four Sisters is sure to please.
The Venue
A short walk from Highbury and Islington station, the Four Sisters is set apart from the more usual Islington pub crawl, tucked just at the top of Canonbury Lane. The building has been there for years, but has recently been refurbished by the current owners. The dark exterior and heavy red velvet curtains in the large main window are inviting, while the unique pub sign is intriguing. Inside, the bar is narrow and quite long, with comfy sofas at the front, low stools and tables to the sides. The back room has further seating and is a great option for private hire, which is available for a minimum spend depending on your party. The colour scheme is deep reds, brown and gold with art deco style wallpaper, dim lighting and chandeliers. An uplit back bar is attractive, accentuating the spirits.
The Atmosphere
The Four Sisters is gaining a loyal following, with nights getting busier towards the end of the week. There’s a big focus on events, particularly the newly launched monthly burlesque nights with Coyote Ugly style shows involving gorgeous girls dancing on the bar – look out for the trap door in the ceiling; on these special nights from this door a hoop appears and the girls do amazing, seemingly impossible stunts. The show aims to be tasteful and engaging and offers a really fun night. Along with burlesque, there are DJ nights and special parties for Halloween and the like. The decor gives the place a sumptuous, seductive atmosphere and the friendly staff help you to have a good time.
The Food
While this pub does not have a menu as such, they do regular offers when Arsenal play at home, such as free beef sliders from 1pm and 25% off wine, prosecco and champagne until 6pm, free bacon sarnies on Saturday and Sunday at 1pm, and, possibly most impressive of all, Skint Sundays, giving you the opportunity to get a free roast dinner at 3pm and enjoy live music from 4pm until close. All the offers are first come first served basis, but give you a great excuse to get down there for a drink.
The Drink
There’s a good range of options here, with reasonable prices to boot. Beers on tap start from £3.70 and include Stella and Becks Vier, and bottled beers start from £3.70 and include Sol, Amstel and San Miguel. A succinct list of cocktails, all priced at £7.50, includes the Louisiana Jam, with Southern Comfort, apple, apricot, mint and lemon, and the Canonbury Green, with Bombay Sapphire, elderflower, lime, cranberry and apple – both are good, but could do with a bit of work in order to strike the perfect balance of spirit to fruit. A good wine list starts at £4 for a small glass, £5.20 for a large and just £15 for a bottle.
The Last Word
A seductive bar in fashionable Islington with a good range of drinks, regular free food (if you’re quick) and monthly burlesque nights, this pub has the perfect recipe for a fun night out.
