One of the last remaining vestiges of the old Firkin pubs brand, the Fox and Firkin has carved a niche for itself as a live music venue.

The Venue
The Fox and Firkin may appear to be a little intimidating at first with a rather strange bold black and red frontage that makes it look rather like an old rocker’s bar. However, upon entering you’ll find what is actually a very traditionally attired pub. Chandelier-style lights are the only nod to any real embellishment in a place where traditional wooden furnishings cover the space, a heavy bar acts as a centrepiece to the room and blackboards sit on the walls declaring the latest deals and upcoming events. Intimidating rocker’s pub it most certainly isn’t, especially when you lay eyes on the large beer garden...

The Atmosphere
The Fox and Firkin has a rather haphazard appeal. In the day it can be on the quiet side as anyone other than the regulars are perhaps put off by the bar-like exterior. It really doesn’t immediately strike you as a place for a quiet afternoon pint, that’s for sure. This is the kind of place that comes into its own thanks to its regular live music events. In fact, it was finalist for ‘Music Pub of the Year’ 2009 and 2011 by The Publican magazine as well as being nominated for the Best Live Music Pub in London 2011 by the Great British Pub Awards. Big plaudits indeed, especially given its out of the way location.

The Drink
There are a couple of draught ales to choose from, such as an IPA and Pedigree, although the focus is mainly skewed towards lager (Fosters, anyone?) and an above-average selection of bottled beers. They also do regular drink deals on their house spirits and mixers.

The Last Word
The Fox and Firkin is one of those pleasant surprises you sometimes come across. If you like live music then this is worth seeking out.
