The ViewLondon Review
Take a flight of fancy back to the ‘30s in the sophisticated Fumoir.
The Venue
The Fumoir, located within one of London's finest hotels Claridges, is a time warp. Once you locate the bar (which is behind a discrete glass door off the lobby) you can feast on some of the original Lalique panels that decorate the walls. More modern additions from Lalique are equally stunning, including an etched glass border that runs around the bar. The room is dark and smoky in colouring with seating on plush purple velvet benches or soft purple tweed chairs. Fresh flowers are on every table and to the side of the bar is a collection of Lalique glassware.
The Atmosphere
The Fumoir is tremendously comfortable - clearly, it is designed for people with no worries (or who are keen to forget the worries they have) who wish to take in sophisticated elegance. The staff are efficient and immaculately presented, and the clientele is a mixture of industry fat cats and the young and gorgeous.
The Food
Fancy some caviar? Or how about sashimi or sushi? The canapes menu is not huge but looks thoroughly delightful – although it comes at a dizzying price.
The Drink
Fizzes, swizzles, juleps, daisies, sours, and pick-me-ups, the cocktail menu reads like something from an Evelyn Waugh novel. Cocktails are central to The Fumoir and they have researched the kind of cocktails and drinks popular when the bar launched in the 1930s. There are also wines and Champagnes by the glass and bottle.
The Last Word
The Fumoir is the place to live out all your Jeeves and Wooster fantasies in its classic ‘30s elegance. It is expensive, but is a memory you will carry with you for some time.
