The ViewLondon Review

Review byStephen Farmer02/04/2008
Having gained a reputation as one of the best places to see the London Marathon, The George has enough to make it a popular choice for the rest of the year, too.

The Venue
The George fulfils the needs of many of the local residents who are seduced by its East End charm and contemporary fixtures and fittings. It’s a cosy pub with plenty of wooden seating, little corners, and that less than glamorous floral carpet that East End boozers do so well. It’s a deceptively large pub, too, with three separate bars - the Saloon Bar, Ma Bakers Bar and the Public Bar, all offering something a little different.

The Atmosphere
As with most pubs, the atmosphere of The George tends to be dictated by whatever day and time it is. It’s nearly always humming with activity, with daytimes seeing a heaving lunch trade, full of locals and workers from the ubiquitous building sites in the area. The weekends benefit from live music as well as locals spilling out onto the street whenever there’s football on. Pretty much everyone’s represented though - even the oldies - as the Saloon Bar becomes, affectionately, God’s Waiting Room on weekday afternoons.

The Food
Classic British staples that are perfectly adequate and good value for money are the order of the day at The George. A good selection of sandwiches go down well but if you’re looking for something a little more substantial go for a very well done traditional fish and chips, where a large piece of haddock is dipped in a delicious real ale batter and served up with some outrageously chunky hand cut chips.

The Drink
There’s a good selection of drinks, including an admirable number of real ales, with an excellent Deuchars and Timothy Taylor. Well kept draught lagers complete the beer selection but if you want a good bottle of wine or a filtered coffee you won’t have much luck. The fact that those real ales are kept extremely well however, more than makes up for it.

The Last Word
Now one of the friendliest and welcoming pubs in the area, The George is well worth popping into if you happen to be nearby.
