The ViewLondon Review
A tiny local pub it may seem, but The Gladstone Arms has hidden depths. The VenueTucked away on a side street only a few minutes from Borough tube station, The Gladstone Arms is a small but fantastically cosy pub. There are only a handful of tables and a limited standing area so drinking in here is inevitably an intimate affair, but this only adds to the charm. Live bands play here at regular intervals, taking up much of what little space there is, but this seems to make the music even easier to enjoy over a few drinks. The decor manages to sit somewhere between modern and traditional, with the overall effect being a chilled out venue that you could happily spend a whole evening getting comfortable in.
The AtmosphereThe vibe at The Gladstone Arms matches its style perfectly, with a combination of locals, couples, and groups enjoying the hospitality; even at its busiest the mood is relaxed. The staff are incredibly friendly and give the impression that they are enjoying being at work. Despite the bar being small (and often hidden behind those without seats) you won’t have to wait long to be served, which is a refreshing change when other pubs and bars in the nearby London Bridge area are considered.
The DrinkMost tastes appear to be covered here, with a small but perfectly formed selection of wines and bottled lagers, but most popular seem to be the lagers and ales on tap. The ales are well-kept (sadly something of a rarity in so many places) and the Hobgoblin and Black Sheep in particular seem to go down particularly well. Whatever your tipple, you should be able to enjoy the quality without breaking the bank.
The Last WordWhether you’re after a solitary pint or fancy taking in some live music with your mates, The Gladstone Arms is a unique and charming pub that ticks all the boxes. Definitely worth a visit.
