The ViewLondon Review
The exterior of The Globe was famously used in the popular Bridget Jones Diary movie, and it’s a good thing too as the interior appears to be in dire need of refurbishment. That said, the food and drink is cheap and it has a fantastic location by Borough Market meaning this pub is never short of punters.
The Venue
Close to London Bridge tube and, unsurprisingly, the theatre after which it is named, The Globe has no shortage of customers popping in for a quick pint en route to the station. Boasting its claim to fame as the pub where the famous Bridget Jones Diary was filmed, there are a few tales to be told!
The pub itself is tired and scruffy with bare unpolished floorboards and a basic TV in the corner - it’s clearly in need of a revamp. However, it is one of the cheapest pubs in the area, so for a basic, cheap night out it’s right on the money.
The Atmosphere
The Globe is always full of regulars - mainly local workers - who aren’t in any way cliquey and are always happy to chat to new faces. The staff are also friendly. There is a nice, unassuming atmosphere, which makes a pleasant change in this anonymous city. Make sure you take note that the pub is only open during the weekend on Saturday until the afternoon - with Borough Market so close by the opening times are dictated by their trading times.
The Food
The food menu at The Globe is basic and clearly not the main focus. A few sandwiches (from £2.95) and Plougmans lunches are on sale (£3.45), jacket potatoes are from £2.25, or pizza from £3.95. Soup of the day is just £2.
The Drink
With Fosters Twist, Budweiser, Becks, Kronenbourg, Holsten, Bulmers, Magners and Newcastle Brown available in bottles, and Strongbow, Guinness, Kronenbourg, Stella and Fosters on draft, there is a good selection of beer, cider and lager on sale. A double spirit and mixer is £5.30 and wine starts at £3.75 for a glass of white Chenin Blanc or a red Merlot. £16.95 will buy you a bottle of Petit Chablis Moreau or a red Pinot Noir – it’s hard to find cheaper in Central London.
The Last Word
Despite the unavoidable fact that The Globe is in dire need of a refurb, it doesn’t seem to be short of punters thanks to the handy location, cheap drinks and friendly staff.
