Need somewhere to escape from the designer boutiques of Sloane Street? Head to The Gloucester for a place less about image and more about pints.

The Venue
Situated amidst the chic over-polished window displays of London’s finest designer shops, the dark old-fashioned exterior of The Gloucester certainly catches your eye. For many passers by, clad in labels complete with large sunglasses and high heels, it might as well not be there as Versace or Yves Saint Laurent is the key goal. For those who need a change, The Gloucester is a haven.

The pub itself is nothing fancy, which is exactly its charm. Wood panelling, dark red walls and soft antique lighting make up the average pub decor, with typical haphazard printed carpets and upholstered chairs. The edges are a bit rough, but there is certainly a cosy feel to the space with glimpses of traditional features to make it feel special.

The Atmosphere
An old man will most likely be sitting in the corner of The Gloucester with a pint and a paper, lads and locals have a laugh over a few drinks, and local workers relax knowing they won’t be judged if they’re not wearing an Armani suit. A few husbands, boyfriends, dads and brothers take a break from carrying the shopping. The slightly dingy decor creates a laid back, fuss free atmosphere, echoed and amplified by the crowd. The staff of all ages chat with ease making all from suits to jeans feel comfortable.

The Food
There’s a menu with all dishes under £10, with basics like burgers and chicken and chips, plus a hint of Knightsbridge class with choices like Superfood salads available.

The Drink
Nothing special is offered at the bar, but popular favourites like London Pride, Bombardier, Guinness and Fosters are on tap at £3-£4 a pint, plus there’s a good wine by the glass selection all for under a fiver. The most expensive bottle is £16.30, which is ideal if you’ve just maxed out the credit card on shopping.

The Last Word
In stark contrast to its neighbours, The Gloucester is an unpretentious pub that’s worth popping into.
