Intimate, stylish and friendly, The Glow Lounge radiates an atmosphere that would put most bars in the shade.

The Venue
Situated just off Clapham Common and close to Clapham South tube, The Glow Lounge boasts a convenient location which is put to good use. The interior uses the limited space well and the contemporary style is complemented by some chic sixties fixtures. Exposed brickwork and wood makes it feel relaxed instead of sterile, and the natural feel is continued outside, as foliage housed in railway sleepers ensures the bar’s seated area to the front feels nicely secluded from the busy road. Transforming itself from a daytime cafe into a funky evening bar is inspired, and surprisingly rare – what better way to cure your hangover than returning to the scene of the crime for breakfast?

The Atmosphere
This is where The Glow Lounge really excels. There’s a well heeled clientele that seem intent only on having a good time and immediate comparisons can be made to the slightly less impressive neighbouring venues, but the venue seems to have faith in attracting the right visitors. Superbly friendly staff set the tone and when the more than able DJ starts there are smiles all round, as well as inquisitive glances from over the garden fence. The music fits the vibe too, and any visitors still miffed by the noisy road will soon forget it even exists.

The Food
Being a cafe as well as a bar, there’s a good range of food on offer, from breakfasts right through to the bar menu. The breakfast menu is pretty much an English affair and proves popular, whilst the day and evening dishes come from all corners of the globe so expect anything from Mediterranean staples to Lebanese mezze. Particularly enjoyable examples are the gourmet burgers which are simple yet superbly done, and any of the Central American offerings which benefit hugely from Mexican influence in the kitchen. Desserts are good too, with the homemade brownies being definitely worth those pangs of guilt.

The Drink
Well-kept beers including Star, Stella and an exceptional Hoegaarden make the draught options appealing, and a good array of bottles mean the lager-heads should be happy. The wine selection isn’t extensive but is more than adequate and reasonably priced. Descriptions are accurate too so even if you’re not an expert you should be able to find something that suits your palate. The cocktails are where The Glow Lounge really impresses, with plenty of classics sitting alongside in house creations that show off the bartenders’ flair and enthusiasm. The Aussie Pash is a perfect example, where vodka is infused with raspberry Redskin sweets then mixed with pineapple juice and a little Chambord. If you ask for something special you might even get the manager’s own creation – flaming Sambuca poured over an orange slice and brown sugar into a shot of Galliano. Deliciously potent.

The Last Word
Despite being all the way down the Northern Line, The Glow Lounge is certainly worth jumping on the tube for. And if you’re already in Clapham, you really should be a regular.
