The ViewLondon Review
The Golden Fleece is an old fashioned pub that has a relaxing atmosphere, good real ale and a warm clientele unexpected for this part London. The VenueThe decor is very simple at The Golden Fleece, but nice touches of traditional pub culture make is a little bit special. The deep red ceiling has chic art deco influences, there’s lots of wooden panelling with intricate glass work, and delicate antique lights to finish off the effect. There are plenty of tables and booths to sit at, and worn but comfy seats surround sturdy oak tables around the impressive bar in the centre, there are also a few hideaways to enjoy an even more quiet drink.
The AtmosphereThe clientele isn’t great - or it’s amazing depending on your outlook. There are mainly middle aged men looking for a relaxing pint with colleagues or friends, but they are jovial enough to welcome all. The barmen are very friendly and are up for a bit of banter, creating a fun atmosphere even in the middle of the afternoon when pubs can become a bit depressing. Avoid if the casual drinking scene is not your thing, otherwise this is ideal. The quiet murmur may be odd after stepping in off the roaring streets of the City, but it’s an good place for escape.
The DrinkDon’t come to The Golden Fleece for exotic drinks, this place does simple but delicious beers and ales. There’s lots of choice of ale and beer on tap for all tastes, but also a selection of wine that may not be big, but it’s cheap. Satisfying pub food is also available - perfect for filling up in the cold winter lunchtimes.
The Last WordExtremely laid back, The Golden Fleece manages to hold on to some character in such a fast changing city, and it’s a great place for a lazy afternoon sipping a pint.
